Too Lazy to Clear the Loft? You Could Be Wasting Over £150 per Year on Energy Costs

News provided by Makeover Builders on Tuesday 14th May 2013

LONDON, May 2013----Homeowners who are not taking action to cut down on energy loss with home insulation are missing out on the double benefits of energy savings and potentially higher house prices.
According to the Energy Saving Trust (EST), preparing homes early for the winter chill increases savings considerably. And that means installing home insulation now, while the weather is warm.

‘It’s probably easier to find a qualified team to install what you need during summer months, since fewer people think about insulation during the spring/summer even though it saves on air-con costs,’ says Makeover Builders director Barak Chever.

‘And if you’re redecorating, then it makes financial sense to put in interior insulation at the same time.’

The EST estimates loft insulation could save £150 per year on energy bills, and roughly £300 per year when combined with floor- and cavity wall-insulation. Homeowners should ask their building contractors about lower VAT rates on energy-saving materials, including heating controls, solar panels, loft insulation and wall insulation.

In addition, when it comes to house sales, research by Consumer Focus for the government report Behaviour Change & Energy Use states that 18% of homebuyers claim the property’s EPC influenced their decision.
Yet an IPSOS Mori poll of 2,000 UK homeowners from 28 September–2 October 2012 found that 1 in 5 are confused about energy-saving options. While the most common reason cited for not installing loft insulation – an easy and effective way to reduce energy costs – is the hassle of clearing out the space .
This suggests that, while plenty of homeowners do want to cut down on energy costs, they are poorly informed on thermal standards and home-insulation basics.
