Our North on the Big Screen

This Summer, Film Hub North brings a season of film, entitled Our North, to the region to spotlight the writers, directors and films of the North of England. Part of the British Film Institute’s Film Audience Network, Film Hub North’s ambition is to ensure access to independent film is available across Northern England. Film Hub North is managed by three of the region’s leading independent cinemas: Showroom in Sheffield; Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle, and HOME in Manchester.

Sally Folkard, Our North Lead and Strategic Manager for Film Hub North said:

“In a year when the spotlight is on this part of the country, this is an exciting time to celebrate ‘northern-ness’ in our film clubs, indie cinemas, arts venues and community cinemas all across the North of England. It’s an opportunity for visitors to the North and local audiences to see films that explore, celebrate and foreground the region as a whole, as well as see films very specific to their own communities.”

Part of the Great Exhibition of the North “Inspired By” programme, the season runs all summer and includes films such as:

• Rita, Sue & Bob Too, directed by Alan Clarke, and shown at They Eat Culture on 7^th August at 7:30pm
• The Gamekeeper, directed by Ken Loach, and shown at Showroom Cinema on 16^th August at 6:10pm
• Looks and Smiles, directed by Ken Loach, and shown at Square Chapel Arts on 25^th August at 8pm
• Red, White and Zero, directed by Lindsay Anderson, and shown at HOME on 29^th August at 6:30pm
• 24 Hour Party People, directed by Michael Winterbottom, and shown at Leigh Film Society on 31^st August at 7:30pm

Film Programme Manager of They Eat Culture, Dan Thomas commented:

“This is a great year for the North of England and we are very keen to make sure that the films of the North are represented and seen by as many visitors to the region as possible. Here at They Eat Culture we are excited to be showing Rita, Sue and Bob Too by Alan Clarke, which portrays working-class Yorkshire life realistically, boldly and, by turns, seriously and light-heartedly.”

FILM HUB NORTH is part of the British Film Institute’s ongoing development of the UK’s film and screen landscape, 2018 see’s Film Hub North become a collaborative partnership, led collectively by Sheffield Showroom, Manchester’s HOME and Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema. Tyneside Cinema is the North East’s leading specialised cinema and digital arts venue and is located in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne.
