For the first time in 100 years, military rowing crews will compete at Henley Royal Regatta this week.
The King’s Cup will see crews from the original six nations of Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, the UK and the USA, joined by Germany and the Netherlands, competing in a knock-out format over the final three days of the 2019 Henley Royal Regatta.
The 2019 event will create history:
- The first time men and women in the military will row in the same boat at an elite international event
- The first time in 100 years that there is a military event at Henley Royal Regatta
- The first time 120 allied athletes from eight nations will be rowing, racing and living together
- The first time eight Nations will contribute material of national significance into an alloyed King’s Cup
All eight countries have made a highly symbolic contribution to the creation the 2019 King’s Cup trophy:
Australia: sliver of the original cup and part of The Roll of Honour, Australian War Memorial
Canada: material from the highest point of their first Parliament building
France: four Croix de Guerre awarded each year of WW1
Germany: brass from the historic Gorch Fock sail training vessel
Netherlands: shell cases from the King’s coronation
New Zealand: copper fittings from their 1919 original King’s Cup boat
UK: contribution from Her Majesty The Queen
USA: original fitting from the George Washington commissioned 1797 USS Constitution
