A Makeover Builders’
project on Basing Street in Notting Hill has made it into the March issue of renowned Dutch lifestyle magazine Villa d’Arte.
The North London build team were commissioned by award-winning architecture and interior design firm Eijking Delouwere both to improve the use of space in the flat and to create the right environment for the owners’ fine art and furniture collections.
‘We set out to create a stunning house fit for a magazine shoot and we succeeded’, says Bart Eijking of Eijking Delouwere. ‘We did not set out for quick and dirty repair work, we wanted out house to be the perfect setting for entertaining our friends, to hang our paintings, [and] display my own furniture…Quality and durable solutions were key words in the job description; the result should be good enough for a photo shoot’.
Makeover Builders boosted the open-plan design, installing walk-in wardrobes in the bedrooms, under-stair bookshelves, and an extended built-in cupboard in the new baby room to hold all the basics plus an antique commode.
For an effective backdrop to the art and antiques collection, the team darkened the oak floors to offset pale walls, and created bespoke cupboard doors and moving parts with a high-gloss finish. While the unwired ceiling required diamond drilling to run electrical wiring and hang a Murano glass chandelier.
‘The team restored the ceiling in such a way that it is now impossible to see that it’s been touched. The whole job was done in a ceiled cocoon to prevent any debris and dust in the dining area,’ says Eijking.
A well-planned refurbishment or renovation starts with structural assessments and applications for planning permission. Experienced builders will always consult a structural engineer if demolition is needed, and provide a written report.
