Celebrities open up their wardrobes to raise funds for Nelson Mandela Children's Fund UK

Paloma Faith, Susannah Reid and Kate Garraway have today been announced as some of the celebrities donating pre-loved items from their wardrobes to a ladies' clothes swapping event benefitting the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund UK. This central London fashion event, which gives members of the public a chance to win celebrity treasures, will help raise funds to support the charity's latest project, which is to build a dedicated children's hospital in South Africa.

On Tuesday 28 April 2015, every guest brings along a minimum of 3 good quality, clean items of clothing, handbags, shoes or accessories they no longer need but are proud to pass on. These are added to the other guest donations (think of it as a giant charity shop) along with brand new donations from retailers and special celebrity goodies. Once the guests have all arrived, a countdown takes place and everyone is allowed to leave with as many items as they like!

The event also aims to raise awareness that each year in the UK, women wastefully throw away around 900,000 tonnes of clothing and accessories. These items end up filling landfills with non-biodegradable textiles, causing serious environmental problems. Meanwhile, in other parts of the world like the rural Southern African areas we work in, many of the young women we support would not be able to comprehend such amounts of waste.

Kathi Scott, Executive Director at Nelson Mandela Children's Fund UK, says; "We are so grateful to the celebrity donors and all our generous sponsors who have donated to the event. The much-needed proceeds from the evening will help disadvantaged children in Southern Africa access healthcare, education and better futures."
