Growing Concerns Over the Protection of Sikh Civil Liberties in India

News provided by SRI GURU SINGH SABHA SOUTHALL on Thursday 23rd Mar 2023

Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall and our congregation are deeply troubled by the measures taken by the Government of India to curtail freedom of expression and peaceful assembly in Punjab in recent days. We are particularly concerned about the shutdown of internet services, which is heightening fears of arbitrary detention, disappearances, torture, mistreatment of citizens, and other unconstitutional actions. The arrest of defense lawyers is only exacerbating these anxieties.

We strongly urge the Government of India to reconsider its position and honor its constitutional commitments and obligations to its citizens, as well as uphold international human rights norms and standards. The protection of natural justice, fundamental freedoms, and human rights is critical to building a just and equitable society for all.
