Welsh insurance staff tackle three peaks for charity

News provided by Constructaquote on Tuesday 3rd May 2016

A team of five staff members from Welsh based insurance firm constructaquote.com are tackling the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge.

The insurance staff are putting their phones down and boots on as they prepare to tackle the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for two charities, doing so by climbing 9,000 ft and walking 20 miles.

Staff from Glamorgan based constructaquote.com are looking to raise over £3,000 for Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales and Cure & Action for Tay–Sachs (CATS). Both charities are close to team members Brad Watson and Alisha Edwards, who received incredible support and care for their children.

The challenge will see the team of five, Brad Watson, Alisha Edwards, Adam Gauci, Martin Jones and Steve Davey, ascend over 9,000 ft and hike over 20 miles in just 15 hours, starting at the highest mountain in Wales, Snowdon, then tackling Cadair Idris before finishing on Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons.

“We have arranged a fundraising evening on May 28 at Penallta Rugby Club and are looking for local businesses to provide donations for raffles and other activities. There will be a live band and a DJ on the evening too,” said Brad Watson from constructaquote.com.

The charities are close to both Alisha and Brad. Alisha explains: “My son (Logan) was born in February 2011. During the pregnancy, I was advised that he had gastroschisis. If you’re not familiar with the condition, it is a birth defect of the abdominal wall, leading to the child's intestines protruding outside of their body, through a hole beside the belly button.

When Logan was born, due to his condition, he required immediate surgery and came under the care of the N.I.C.U. in the Heath Hospital. After 5 weeks, he was well enough to come home but still suffered from various ailments as a result of the surgery.

“It was around this time that we all became beneficiaries of their wonderful care. The support that Noah’s Ark provided to us as a family through this difficult time was incredible.”

Brad’s son Archie also spent time being cared for by Noah’s Ark and his family were supported by the CATS Foundation when he was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease. The charities were able to provide equipment, offer invaluable advice and arrange days out for the family. Archie was diagnosed with the disease at 15 months but sadly passed away 14 months later in 2013. The charity continues to provide support to Brad’s family. Brad is a family ambassador for CATS and represents the charity to raise awareness.
