This year’s survey suggests that one of the main factors currently impacting the engineering industry is the ongoing dilemma over Brexit. Industry giants, such as Airbus and Ford, are still concerned about the United Kingdom’s proposed departure from the EU. Many industry experts have implied that Brexit may have well been the catalyst for Honda’s planned manufacturing closure, resulting in a loss of 3,500 jobs.
The survey suggests that despite substantial concerns over Brexit, engineers are still benefitting from substantial salaries. New graduates and junior engineers have an average earning potential of £30,854 per year. Senior engineers and managers earn an average salary of £51,136 while Directors and above earn an average of £82,480. The average salary for engineers in all sectors was £51,253 while the energy, renewables, and nuclear energy sector has a remarkably higher average at £58,695.
In keeping with previous years, the majority of the survey’s respondents said that they were in senior positions within the engineering industry. In fact, 46.6% of this year’s participants make up senior roles, which is a slight increase from last year’s survey. At 29%, managers make up the second-largest group of respondents while juniors came in at just 11.9%.
The survey also focused on average salaries regionally. Boasting top salaries were Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with the highest average salary coming in at £65,571. The UK had the second 2 highest average salary at £60,893. Other English regions fell short, and Northern England featured the lowest average salary for engineers at £52,966.
Another important takeaway from the survey results is that job satisfaction within the industry has dipped slightly. This year an average of 53.4% of the participants stated that they were happy within their current role, compared to last year’s satisfaction rating of 56.5%.
