Engineers and Street-Dancers Reach Science Engagement of the Year Finals

October 22nd, 2020 - VSTEM Educational start-up in London announced they reached the finals of the Berlin Falling Wall Science Engagement of The Year competition. The Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) workshops and event service for schools, provided by qualified engineers and dancers, were selected as finalists in the prestigious competition out of entries from 72 different countries.

Founded in late 2018, VSTEM Education provides science and engineering engagements (workshops and school talks) with the support of some of the best professional street-dancers in the UK. The dancers specialise in a variety of dance styles such as in body-popping, Bboying (break-dancing) and hip-hop. The engagements are delivered in both primary and secondary schools. The school talks focus on careers in science, STEM, environmental sustainability, climate change and the future. The school workshops cover a range of topics such as coding, basic robotics, maths, energy, forces and sustainability.

The project has broken down the barrier between science and art. This has been made possible thanks to the dancers who bring in their creative thinking. The dancers incorporate break-dance moves such as flips and windmills to explain concepts such as forces and motion during school assemblies. It is this unique mix of art and science that has helped the project receive international recognition. The Falling Walls Foundation described the project as "breaking the wall of science & art and education".

So far, the company has reached over 5000 students, and the feedback has been excellent.

“thank you so much for the visit this week the children loved it and have not stopped talking about it since” - Sacred Heart Primary school

"Everything was fantastic thank you. Very prepared, step by step explanations, a clear understanding of what renewable energy was, we were very impressed and will definitely recommend!" – Cuckoo Hall Academy, London

In the coming academic year, it hopes to expand services across the UK. Additionally, the company has been invited abroad in 2021 to provide engagements in Europe.

VSTEM Education was founded by Vidura, who is a qualified Aerospace Engineer and a professional street-dancer. He has the ambition to launch a public show to encourage social change through sustainability and STEM in the near future.
