Coburg House is a thriving hub of creativity in Edinburgh's Leith. The residents have been steadily gathering over the years and now form one of Edinburgh's foremost creative communities. There are now 50 studios providing a home to over 80 artists in a range of disciplines – from painters to print makers, jewellers to ceramicists, weavers to fashion designers.

One thing unites them all and that is a passion for creativity and a level of skill that is often remarked upon. Residents can boast excellent credentials, exhibiting all over the world and often winning awards and prizes for their skills.

Geoffrey Mann – Jerwood Prize winner who sculpts 3D objects that play with the notions of time and motion. Stephanie Rew recently exhibited her exquisite nudes in kimonos in San Francisco. Emily Hogarth designed and made paper cuts for amongst others Nivea and Cadbury. Bryony Knox fashions the trophies for Red Bull Extreme Sports with her fantastical metal and mixed material creations. James Donald weaver and engraver recently won the Bronze Award at the World Craft Council. Catherine Aitken has designed a range of tweed accessories for Andy Murrays' Cromlix Hotel. David Mackenzie and Will Morris are designing and making the site hoarding to be installed around the new Dundee V&A. And that's only some of them.

The other thing that really stands out is the diversity of work. From figurative to abstract, seascape to portrait; from print to pen and ink; precious metals to acrylic; tailoring to textile. The inspiration is diverse and the treatment of it even more varied.

To get a glimpse of life inside the building come along to the Open Studios. It has been widely praised as the most vibrant and exciting Open Studios around by a number of people – locals and visitors alike.

The residents at Coburg House throw their doors open twice a year. This year, the first of the Open Studios is on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th August – it will be part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and riot of colour and creativity. The second is Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th December – a perfect opportunity to come and get some Christmas shopping done.
