Charity picnic brings Camden community together

News provided by Age UK Camden on Monday 19th Jun 2017

On Friday 16 June, Age UK Camden and Age UK hosted a community picnic in Tavistock Square as part of the Great Get Together in memory of Jo Cox MP. The two charities were joined by Keir Starmer MP, Leader of Camden Council Georgia Gould and local businesses, as well as some of the older people that Age UK Camden works with. Guests enjoyed tea, sandwiches and cakes, giant games and the opportunity to get to know their neighbours a bit better.

Keir Starmer MP opened the event by talking about the impact of the work of Jo Cox and how important it is for charities like Age UK Camden to reach out to their communities. He said: “It’s fantastic to be here with you all.”

Leader of Camden Council Georgia Gould told the crowd that: “The opportunity to get together is now more important than ever.”

Janet Guthrie, Age UK Camden’s Chair, spoke about the charity’s services to support older people in Camden’s diverse communities. And Caroline Abrahams, Age UK Charity Director, highlighted their work as one of the partners of the Jo Cox Commission and ended by saying that "out of bad things, good things come".

One of the guests who’d brought picnic food along to share with her neighbours said: “It's a fun way to bring the community together.”

Thanks to Oliver Wyman staff for volunteering at and sponsoring the event and for the refreshments kindly provided by Wing Wing, Pret (Theobalds Rd) and Parkway Patisserie.
