According to new research undertaken by Barclays, being your own boss is the main driver for people to start their own business. In fact, over half of respondents, 54 per cent, state that they gave up their day job because they wanted to work for themselves. Atlas Outsourcing Ltd MD says: "This is an interesting development. After years of a weak economy and redundancies, we are now moving in the right direction. People take ownership of their future and don't want to be dependant on someone else's success."

Small businesses are the backbone of the British economy. Therefore, Atlas Outsourcing Ltd are pleased about the results of the Barclays study and are optimistic about the British economy in 2015 and the years ahead. "With an increased number of small businesses, we look forward to an increase in employment opportunities and consumer spending", say Matt Stewart, Managing Director of Atlas Outsourcing.

The Barclays study reveals that being made redundant from previous employment inspired twenty per cent of current SME owners. Sixteen per cent of respondents say that turning a hobby into a business was one of the key drivers to open up their business.

With a positive forecast for SMEs laid out in the latest Autumn Statement and the current resources available, Atlas Outsourcing Ltd are looking at a fantastic year ahead: "Today it is much easier to open up a business than a few years ago. We are very optimistic because the British government has implemented several tools for business owners." In fact, the implementation of several lending schemes and information platforms support today's entrepreneurs.

Having the right tools available is however not everything that is important when running a business, feel Atlas Outsourcing. MD for Business Lending and Enterprise at Barclays, Rebecca McNeil, agrees: "'It is important that business owners are passionate about what they do, as commitment and motivation are key tools to getting a successful business up and running…"
