A Symposium on Politics and Religion
A Symposium to tackle the question of whether religion has a place in politics
Portsmouth, Thursday 4th November: Bishop Philip Egan has organised an online symposium on Saturday 6th November 2021 focussing on politics and religion. It will tackle the question of whether religion has a place in politics and examine topical political issues such as the environment, immigration, homelessness and diversity.
It comes at a time when world leaders are meeting to discuss climate change and the environment at COP 26 and various new legislation on issues such as assisted suicide and selective abortion has been proposed by politicians.
The symposium will include keynote addresses from the Rt. Hon. Jacob Rees-Mogg, MP for North East Somerset, Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council and the Rt. Hon. Ruth Kelly. As Labour MP for Bolton West 1997-2010 she became the youngest ever woman to serve in the UK Cabinet, holding a number of positions, including Secretary of State for Transport, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and Secretary of State for Education and Skills. She is presently a member of the Vatican’s Council for the Economy.
In his invitation letter, Bishop Philip said that:
“It is important to bring the Catholic Tradition into a critical conversation with the thinking and philosophy of various cultural sectors such as science, politics, education and economics and we invite people of all faiths and none to engage with us.
“I look forward to hearing the discussions on the day and hope that many people of all faiths and none take this opportunity to engage in dialogue with us about these important issues.
The Symposium will run from 10am until 4.30pm and tickets are available from the following website:
