The Growth500 is an annual list and program created by Business Leader, and awards the UK’s 500 fastest-growing companies. Compiled and researched by Robert Watts – the compiler of The Sunday Times Rich List – the list is a credible source to know the fastest growing companies in the UK. Watts did the ranking in a data-driven manner. He did the work to trace the UK's fastest growing companies. There were no self-nominations, no sponsored entries, and no private data submissions – everything was independent, objective and merit-based. The revenue increases of each company were calculated from publicly filed annual accounts with Companies House using a range of approaches.

The compilation of the list was born out of an idea by Business Leader, a business media and membership community (by mid-market business for mid-market businesses) as part of its mission to help mid-sized businesses grow in difficult economic times. It’s named, from NatWest to PwC, after how companies of all stripes and sizes, from green businesses to tech start-ups, are “actively pursuing scale, even in tougher conditions”.

The Growth500 is the ultimate recognition of companies who are on the way up in the business Universe. Curated and collated by Robert Watts, the compiler of The Sunday Times Rich List, the list is based on analytically executed research. Paid sponsorships, self-nominations, and private data submissions are no longer part of the ranking process, which is now entirely independent and performance-driven.

Each company was evaluated in multiple validation checks according to their performance and was measured through publically available financial data filed at Companies House. The eligibility requirements were any and all UK companies which had turned over more than a certain amount a year, but no maximum, thus permitting start-ups and scale-ups of all sizes to compete.
