Wife dedicates Tree of Life win to wonderfully supportive husband

Abi Dennehy has won an engraved leaf to hang on Penny Brohn UK’s Tree of Life and has dedicated the leaf to her husband, Mike.

Abi won the personalised leaf after taking part in Stomp, a sponsored walk organised by leading cancer charity, Penny Brohn UK and entering a raffle on the day.

Talking about winning the leaf, Abi said: “Since I was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017, Penny Brohn UK had been a great help to me. I wanted to take part in the Stomp walk to give something back to the charity and found it a great experience and huge achievement to walk six miles. I was touched to receive lots of generous sponsorship from family and friends. I never win raffles so didn’t give it much thought so you can imagine my surprise when I heard I had won an engraved leaf to hang on the new Tree of Life!

“I chose to tribute my wonderfully supportive husband in the engraving on the leaf. Mike is there at every step of what is a difficult time for us. We went to the National Centre on a beautiful, sunny, winter morning. The sun glinting on the copper leaves gave the whole experience a slightly magical and uplifting quality.”

Kirstie Tudor, Legacy and In Memory Officer, said: “We were delighted to welcome Abi and Mike to the National Centre when they came to hang their leaf on our Tree of Life. We were touched to hear Abi’s story and how she dedicated the leaf to Mike for all the support he gives her.

“Personalising a leaf on the Tree of Life enables anyone whose life has been touched by cancer – personally or through a friend or family member – to celebrate, pay tribute or remember them.”

The sycamore-shaped leaves, made out of copper, can be engraved with a special message and hung on the Tree of Life. The beautiful hand crafted metal tree is situated within its own special garden in the grounds of Penny Brohn UK’s National Centre near Bristol. It provides a quiet space to enjoy a moment of peaceful reflection. Leaves are available to purchase for £100 and will hang on the tree for 12 months.

With over 38 years’ experience, Penny Brohn UK recognises that people with cancer need more than medicine. Its Bristol Whole Life Approach provides integrated whole person cancer support that works alongside medical treatment to achieve the best health and wellbeing.
