Urenco extends partnership with Pump Aid
On World Water Day, Urenco has confirmed its initial one year partnership with Pump Aid has been extended for a further three years.
Pump Aid has been delivering sustainable water solutions to communities in sub-Saharan Africa for more than 20 years. Almost 10,000 communities and nearly 1.5 million people now have access to safe clean water as a result of its initiatives.
Rosie Salkeld, Social Impact Lead, Urenco explains:
“The focus of our partnership remains on supporting the training of entrepreneur engineers in Malawi to construct and maintain community wells and pumps providing a clean, sustainable water solution for around 45,000 people a year. But we are also now looking at ways to combine the engineering talent and knowledge within Urenco to assist with some of the challenges faced by the work team in Malawi.”
This partnership aligns with the Urenco sustainability strategy, our corporate values and several UN sustainable development goals, most notably ‘Clean water and sanitation’. It also helps with gender equality as it frees up time by removing distances walked by women and girls to collect water, enabling more time for education. Further the social enterprise model enhances skills of both men and women, enabling greater economic choice. World Water Day highlights the global water and sanitation crisis – through our partnership with Pump Aid, Urenco is supporting a sustainable solution to the impact of climate change: improved sanitation, irrigation, and less food insecurity.
“Quite simply, without Urenco’s support we wouldn’t be able to offer so many rural communities access to clean water. I am delighted that through our extended partnership an additional 27 local people will be able to train as mechanics to maintain, fit and supply water pumps, creating jobs and a sustainable way to ensure access to safe water for thousands of rural Malawians. Further, the extension of our partnership to involve Urenco colleagues in helping us resolve some of the engineering challenges we face is very exciting and will have a genuine, sustainable impact in Malawi. Together we are supporting rural communities with the tools to become truly sustainable and to thrive and grow.”
