With the World Cup only a matter of weeks away, online retailer Silverfox Travel & Outdoors have reported a surge in sales for their Brazil travel adapter during the month of May. The online store have seen sales for this particular product almost triple in May compared to the previous month.
The company have also reported an increase in sales in other areas, particularly their travel security range, with items such as combination luggage locks, door guards and personal alarms flying off their warehouse shelves. "Brazil is notorious for crimes such as pick-pocketing, especially around busy, tourist areas. With this and the current unrest in the country, travellers are clearly taking extra precautions when it comes to their personal safety and that of their belongings".
There have been reports that Brazil's crime has increased in the lead up to the World Cup this summer, with attempted murders increasing slightly and muggings increasing to 37%. According to the FCO 155,548 British nationals visited Brazil in 2012 and the majority of these visits were trouble free.
The staff at Silverfox Travel & Outdoors said “It's great to see that world cup fans are being sensible and taking precautions ahead of their visit to Brazil” and have shared some tips to help keep travellers and their belongings safe this summer.
- Leave expensive gadgets, designer watches and clothing at home, these items will attract the unwanted attention of thieves and make you a target for muggings.
- Don't carry large amounts of cash around with you, bring enough to get you through the day. You can also store money in an under clothes wallet to keep it out of sight, and make it more difficult to be stolen.
- Stay alert in busy areas and on public transport as pick-pockets thrive in these conditions
- If someone attempts to mug you, it is best to hand over what they want rather than risk injury. Many attacks in Brazil involve weapons, including firearms.
- Avoid dangerous areas such as Favelas where possible and try to travel in groups, especially after dark.
