TCW Enters Clinical Waste as Crisis Looms over UK
In 2021, 16 Billion Needles were used Globally, indirectly causing the Rise of Hepatitis C. In UK alone there are 60,000+ Infected with Hep C.
Medical waste is one segment that was once avoided but now governments all-round the globe have started taking it seriously. If we talk about the United Kingdom alone, in 2019, about 538,000 tons of waste was generated and at the time it took £115 million to dispose of.
In recent times, a lot of start-ups have started growing around this sector. We came across one of the start-ups, Trikon Clinical Waste owned by Nat Patel. This start-up has made its mission to handle clinical waste responsibly. They also create awareness through free site visits and providing education on the risks that waste poses to the environment and society.
We have had a chance to converse with him on his new venture.
What led you to create a company on waste management?
In all honesty, I never thought I would be creating such a company. But when I saw the figures it just baffled me. Just to give you an idea, in 2021 there were 16 billion needles used all over the world and not all of them were disposed of as they should have been. Reuse of such needles gives birth to diseases like Hepatitis C.
If I talk about the United Kingdom alone, about 0.5% to 1% population is infected with Hepatitis C. This comes to about 60,000+.
I have been in the commercial waste business for 7 to 8 years but I saw an opportunity here and decided to contribute to society by creating a business that treats waste management, especially clinical waste, in a responsible way. As per a report created by Global Market Insights, the waste management market is expected to double itself in a decade. It is time we take responsibility and control this.

What about the carbon footprint? Won’t the disposing of waste affect global warming?
In a way it does, but then there is a prescribed way provided by the government that we abide by. There is certain waste that needs to be disposed of and cannot be recycled. This is usually done through an autoclave or high temperature; which contributes the most to the carbon footprint. However, certain categories can be recycled, these caused the lowest carbon footprint.
What is the way forward?
We have undertaken 8-9 projects in a span of 10 months. With all my experience, I believe, being responsible is the only way forward. The hospitals, factories, mills, and any facility which are contributing towards waste of any kind need to be responsible enough to ensure that the waste is disposed of responsibly. They need to understand that the waste produced is immensely harmful to society. This is where we come into the picture and ensure that it is done the correct way.
