Songlines magazine announces the winners of the Songlines Music Awards 2014
With the Songlines Music Awards now in their sixth year, Songlines is delighted to announce this year's winners. The awards, voted by Songlines readers and the general public, celebrate and acknowledge the wealth of musical talent from around the world reviewed in Songlines magazine. There are four categories: Best Artist, Best Group, Cross-Cultural Collaboration and Newcomer - the results from the initial vote generated the nominees, the top four in each category (for details, see www.songlinesmusicawards.com).
The winners, selected by the Songlines editorial team and listed below, are published in the June 2014 issue of Songlines, the special 100th edition, on sale in the UK from today. A 16-track compilation album (SPLCD010) featuring the winners and all nominees is out now on CD, exclusively from Amazon.co.uk
And the winners are...
BEST ARTIST
Bassekou Kouyaté
For the album Jama Ko on Out Here Records
BEST GROUP
Tamikrest
For the album Chatma on Glitterbeat Records
CROSS-CULTURAL COLLABORATION
Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita
For the album Clychau Dibon on Astar Artes
NEWCOMER
Family Atlantica
For the album Family Atlantica on Soundway Records
"It wasn't deliberate, but it's not surprising that we have two winners from Mali, given the richness of music being created there, despite the political difficulties the country has endured," says Simon Broughton, Songlines editor-in-chief. "The title-track on Bassekou's album Jama Ko is like a call for the country to unite. I'm glad the other winners, the Touareg group Tamikrest, represent the northern part of the country. Family Atlantica have recorded a superb debut. Their music has a long history, but is very contemporary and we're delighted that they're performing at the Songlines Encounters Festival on June 5. And Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita have blended the harp and kora of Wales and Senegal in the most seductive way."
