Lawyers at Simpson Millar have moved to ensure their essential services will remain available for families, even after Legal Aid has been withdrawn by the government.
The costs for most family law cases such as divorce proceedings or matters involving the custody of children now have to be borne fully by the people involved, leaving thousands of people facing the prospect of representing themselves in a highly complex process.
To begin plugging that gap, Simpson Millar has launched Pay As You Go Law Advice, which provides a simple service based on time credits costing as little as £75 so that work can be carried out to suit the budgets of those would formerly have been eligible for legal aid.
Emma Pearmaine, Head of the Family Law Team at Simpson Millar, explains: "The withdrawal of legal aid is already affecting people across the country, and I think it is essential that solicitors offer a simple, affordable means of securing legal support to families battling with complex issues."
Simpson Millar’s Pay As You Go service involves a straightforward consultation where one of the firm’s family law experts will explain the legal work that needs to be done, and how much time it will take for each stage. "People can then buy time credits to pay for each of the necessary stages, one at a time," continues Emma. "Each case will be handled by a specialist family law solicitor and clients will remain in complete control over the amount they are spending on legal costs and how much they want their lawyer involved."
The Pay As You Go Family Law Advice service is the first of its kind offered by Simpson Millar LLP and will provide a means tested service that is affordable and transparent.
Simpson Millar’s Pay as you Go service is limited to clients who would otherwise have been eligible for Legal Aid funding. People can seek advice about everything from care proceedings and same sex matters to issues involving children and divorce.
