Sainsbury's Staff visit The Nomad Trust Night Shelter

The morning of Tuesday 12th April saw a team of Volunteers from Sainsbury's visit The Nomad Trust's Emergency Night Shelter to see how they can support the charity.

Led by Deputy Store Manager, Andy Burgess, the team included Staff from across all departments, looking for ways they can support their community.

They were shown the shelter's facilities and given the opportunity to talk with staff about supporting the Trust.

Mr Burgess explained how the team wanted 'to understand why and how' their support was needed; 'we can look at both helping within the community and reducing our waste.'

The team invited The Nomad Trust to submit an application to their upcoming Charity of the Year project, which will be voted on by Sainsbury's customers later this year.

Sainsbury's have a very successful waste management programme, where none of their waste food goes in to landfill. Excess food goods are donated, or refined in to biofuel.

The Supermarket has provided the trust with food donations over the past three years, and is now wishing to expand and formalise this agreement.

Victoria Bradshaw, Project Manager for the Nomad Shelter, said 'Our residents eat well, lots of fruit and veg… But we're really excited at the prospect of good quality meat, and particularly eggs.'

When speaking with Nomad Staff about the supply of food goods, Mr Burgess, Deputy Store Manager, disagreed with policies ensuring disposal of edible food goods, stating;

'If we would eat it, why can't someone else..?'

Speaking of The Nomad Trust's Shelter, 'it is in our city, our community, and we can raise our game!'

The Nomad Trust and YMCA Lincolnshire have just had plans approved to build a new Emergency and Supported Accommodation Centre, including Day Services, Training facilities, Clinical and Social spaces.

Those interested in supporting the new facility can donate to our #SleepEasyLincoln2016 campaign; phase one of our fundraising for new build, open until Monday 18th April.
