Royal scarecrows make themselves at home

A group of students from Redruth School in Cornwall enjoyed a fun afternoon at the Miners Court Extra Care scheme making Royal scarecrows with residents and visitors to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations.

The textile students and their teacher Tracey Mackellar joined forces with members of the Happy Crafters group at the Coastline Housing Extra Care scheme in the town and produced scarecrows in the likeness of a number of Royals to be displayed in the grounds this summer.

Ruth Purdy, who runs the Happy Crafters group, said: “Participants were very impressed with the ability of the students and thoroughly enjoyed having staff and students from Redruth School in to work with them on this project.”

Jo Hopkins from Coastline Housing added: “Scarecrows Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh currently have pride of place in the entrance to Miners Court and look rather grand if we do say so ourselves! It was a great day, and wonderful to see young and old working together so well.”

The Happy Crafters group runs weekly for older people in Redruth and is funded by the Cornwall Community Foundation. It aims to support people in feeling better and living well by giving access to the arts to encourage a calm focus and relaxation.
