RIHANNA NABS PETA US AWARD FOR FAUX-LEATHER CAPSULE COLLECTION
FENTY Earns Kudos for Animal-Free Hoodie, Corset Dress, and More
London – A "Compassion in Fashion" Award is on its way from PETA US to Rihanna, whose fashion line, FENTY, just debuted a capsule collection of high-quality faux-leather items, including a corset dress and skirt, button-down shirts, and more.
"Rihanna should take a bow for this stunning animal-friendly collection," says PETA Director Elisa Allen. "With her new vegan collection, Rihanna shows how easy it is to create a killer look that no animal had to die for."
A PETA video exposé of the world's largest leather producer revealed that gentle cows and bulls were branded on the face, electroshocked, and beaten before being killed for their skin. The process of turning animal skin into leather also requires the use of chemicals, including cyanide, and produces massive amounts of the carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to climate change.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to wear" – opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. Rihanna joins a long of list of stars who've used vegan materials in their fashion collections, including Serena Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Rooney Mara, RZA, and Jessica Simpson.
