Organized Crime Considered Being the Biggest Cyber Risk
The recently published KuppingerCole Digital Risk and Security Awareness Survey provides a number of interesting findings around the changing perception of Cyber Risks. One area of this survey looked at the types of attackers considered being the biggest threat.
The most frightening type of attacks comes from organized crime, including attacks that are associated with industrial espionage, blackmailing, and particularly a potential loss of reputation, for instance when large amounts of passwords are stolen and sold on the black market. Internal attackers also are perceived as massive risks.
Depending on the industry and the geography, nation-state attackers and politically motivated attackers also are identified as severe risks. In particular, governmental organizations and corporations from industries such as Aerospace & Defense (in case of nation-state attacks) and Finance (in case of politically motivated attackers) feel themselves threatened by these groups of attackers.
Overall, there appears to be a far better perception of the cyber-security risks than ever before, particularly due to the public attention to today's issues.
Despite the increased focus on external attackers and the increase in external threats, organizations should not ignore the challenges caused by internal attackers. Finding a balance of countermeasures against external attackers and implementing a strong baseline security infrastructure for the internal IT infrastructure is mandatory.
