Onesie pub crawl to raise funds in fight against chronically underfunded disease

News provided by Pancreatic Cancer Action on Tuesday 6th May 2014

Michael Colclough of Stoke-On-Trent has decided to run a onesie fundraising pub crawl on 24th of May for Pancreatic Cancer Action.

Michael and nine friends hope to raise hundreds by running a three mile pub crawl visiting 13 pubs through three towns. Michael said, “The reason I am doing this is to make people aware of pancreatic cancer and that early diagnosis is key. Sadly my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer so it’s a cause close to my heart.”

Currently, the survival rate for pancreatic cancer is just three per cent, which is the lowest of all 22 common cancers. This is because people are often diagnosed too later for surgery, which is currently the only cure.

“He had been going to doctors for four months with severe stomach pains and was repeatedly diagnosed with acid in the stomach,” continues Michael. "Sadly, he wasn’t diagnosed until he was admitted to A & E with severe stomach pains. He had a CT scan and the results came back that he had been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer.

“We are raising funds to help towards earlier diagnosis so other families in the future do not have to experience what we are are going through.”

Onesies are essential attire for anyone who wishes to join in the fun antics. The pub crawl will start at 1pm on the 24th May at The Wheatsheaf pub in Tunstall, Stoke-On-Trent and will be finishing at Manhattan bar in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent. Local pubs are in full support of the fundraiser and are actively encouraging people to attend and donate to the cause.

Pancreatic Cancer Action is committed to working towards earlier diagnosis of the disease so that surgery, currently the only cure, is made available to the sufferer.

Ali Stunt, Founder of Pancreatic Cancer Action, said: “We are delighted that Michael and his friends are giving their time to support Pancreatic Cancer Action and look forward to seeing the pictures.

”As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals to help us continue our vital work. Please back them in their fundraising efforts so that we can continue research into early diagnosis and raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.”
