New Borehole Project Delivers Safe Drinking Water to Hundreds in Rural Nigerian Community.

Hereford, UK – June, 2026 – Hundreds of residents in Ido-Osun, Osun State, now have reliable access to safe drinking water following the completion of a new community borehole project delivered by Hope Spring Water, a UK-registered charity dedicated to improving access to clean water across Africa.

The newly completed Ido-Osun Borehole Project, funded through donations generated by Hope Spring eCards alongside contributions from supporters and volunteers, is expected to benefit more than 400 residents, significantly reducing dependence on unsafe ponds, uncovered wells and seasonal streams.

For years, families in Ido-Osun relied on contaminated water sources located far from their homes. Women and children often walked long distances every day to collect water, limiting opportunities for education, employment and family life.

One resident, Fatima, described how life has changed.

"Before, I woke before sunrise every day to fetch water from a pond nearly thirty minutes away. Today, I walked only a few minutes to collect clean water close to my home. My children now leave for school on time, and our daily lives have completely changed."

Hope Spring began work after carrying out a detailed community assessment in partnership with local leaders, women's groups, teachers and healthcare workers. Community members played an active role throughout the project, helping identify the borehole location and establishing a local water management committee before construction began.

Drilling commenced in May 2026, reaching a depth of approximately 120 metres to access a sustainable underground aquifer capable of supplying water throughout the year. The completed system includes a 1,500-litre elevated storage tank, concrete collection areas and improved drainage designed to promote hygiene and long-term sustainability.

The project is already delivering measurable social benefits.

A community health worker reported a noticeable reduction in cases of diarrhoea since the water system became operational.

"Safe water is medicine," the health worker said. "We are already seeing fewer water-related illnesses in the community."

Local education leaders have also observed improvements.

"Our pupils now arrive at school with more energy because they are no longer spending hours collecting water before classes begin," said the headteacher of a local school.

The project was not without challenges. Difficult underground rock formations required specialised drilling equipment, while seasonal rainfall delayed construction of the elevated storage platform. Despite these setbacks, the project was successfully completed in June 2026.

"The Ido-Osun Borehole Project demonstrates how access to clean water transforms health, education and economic opportunity," Mr Tomi, Hope Spring spokesperson said. "Every eCard purchased and every donation made by our supporters directly contributes to projects like this, helping communities build healthier and more sustainable futures."

Millions of people across Nigeria continue to lack access to safely managed drinking water. Hope Spring says additional funding will allow similar projects to be delivered in other underserved communities.
