National Grid Car Incentive Scheme Scoops International Award For CO2 levels

This sits comfortably below the new car average of 133g/km and is below the EU target of 130g/km by 2015.

It's one of a number of green initiatives which saw National Grid awarded the Supply and Demand Chain Executive Green Award for 2013 for its sustainable procurement practices.

National Grid manages the physical infrastructure of the gas and electricity grid and is responsible for connecting people to the energy they need across Great Britain. It has a company car fleet of around 3,200 vehicles which is limited to vehicles with emissions under 160g/km. However, people are incentivised to choose greener alternatives which has seen the average drop dramatically.

Other initiatives that impressed the judges were a cable decommissioning project in Derbyshire. A competitive tender for the safe removal of the cables and related assets from a section of the grid in the Peak District was awarded to a contractor who could recycle or reuse 100 per cent of the decommissioned cable, oil and materials.

Speaking after hearing of their award success, James Murnaghan Market Intelligence and Sustainable Procurement Manager for National Grid's global procurement strategy, said: "National Grid takes its responsibility for environmental sustainability very seriously. It's our job to maintain and improve the gas and electricity networks to ensure a safe and sustainable energy infrastructure into the future.

"This in turn provides us with real opportunity to think about the way we work and how we source all the materials and services we need to operate. By setting ourselves and our suppliers environmental challenges, we're encouraging them think more sustainably and reduce both our carbon footprints."
