It forms part of International Music Day, which began in France in 1982 and is now celebrated in over 120 countries and 700 cities each year on the 21 June.

About Making Music
Since 1935, Making Music has been the membership organisation for amateur music in the UK, bringing together musicians and music groups of all genres and abilities.
We support, connect and champion everyone who makes, performs and presents music on a voluntary basis. The services we provide allow our members – ranging from symphony orchestras to samba bands – to cross the boring things off their ‘to-do’ lists and get on with making music.
As the voice of amateur music among policy makers and stakeholders at a national and regional level, we aim to transform lives and enrich communities across the UK through music making.

About Music Day
Music Day is about celebrating all music making at all levels, not just the popular and profitable. It is an opportunity for people everywhere to perform, listen and join together in the enjoyment of experiencing live music. It creates shared experiences and an unusual opportunity to enjoy all styles of live musical performance for free.
In France, where it has been going strong for 24 years, Music Day takes the form of a town festival, with every town letting loose for one day, breaking the rules and allowing music into every space available. Established in 2013, Music Day UK is still in its infancy but shows every sign of emulating the French model in the years to come, as the number and scale of events continues to grow.
