On Thursday 6 June 2019, Katie Simmonds who runs the Russell Square cabmen’s Shelter will be holding her annual fundraiser to help raise money for the London Taxi Drivers’ Charity for Children (LTCFC).
It was in this actual cabmen’s Shelter that the LTCFC began back in 1928. It was originally located in Leicester Square, before being moved to Russell Square where it now proudly stands.
All food and drinks served on the day can be purchased by way of donation and there will be some great raffle prizes up for grabs.
There will be vintage taxis on display at the cabmen’s shelter and LTCFC committee members will be helping Katie Simmonds raise awareness and more importantly, fundraising for this wonderful cause.
The LTCFC are kindly being assisted by a team of volunteer licensed London taxi drivers who will be fundraising on the day by collecting donations and donating their tips for the day.
At last year’s fundraiser Gary Oldman popped by for a photograph!
What are the LTCFC fundraising for?
The LTCFC are raising money for their 2019 Southend-on-Sea outing, when they take over 250 special needs and disadvantaged children to the seaside for the day.
For many of the children it will be the first time they have been in a London taxi, seen the sea and all the rides in Adventure Island.
If you would like to help and you are in the Russell Square area on Thursday 6 June, please pop by the cabmen’s shelter, grab a coffee, cake or bite to eat and this will help a very worthy cause.
If you would like to find out more about the LTCFC and the fantastic work they do to help special needs and disadvantaged children, please visit ltcfc.org.uk.
About the Cabmen’s Shelter Fund
The Cabmen’s Shelter Fund was established in 1875 to run shelters for the drivers of hansom cabs and later hackney carriages.
Between 1875 and 1914, 61 cabmen’s shelters were constructed. Today, only a few working shelters remain, they are all Grade II listed buildings and they are all still run by the Cabmen’s Shelter Fund.
Katie Simmonds has run the cabmen’s shelter at Russell Square for the last 5 years.
