Human Rights Law Student to represent Great Britain at Miss Universe 2017

Anna Burdzy, 25, from Leicester will be departing on Saturday for Las Vegas to represent Great Britain at the international finals of Miss Universe on 26 November 2017. The competition hosts contestants from over 100 countries.

Since the pageant’s change of ownership from Donald Trump to WME IMG in 2015, the competition has seen a significant shift in focus from external beauty to a celebration of empowered woman taking into consideration their careers and success, issues of female empowerment, inner beauty, intelligence and confidence; all of which highlight the Miss Universe motto of being ‘confidently beautiful’ and having social responsibility. This refreshing and modern concept celebrates and encourages all women to excel in whatever they choose to do in life. Becoming Miss Universe is not only about being beautiful, but more about being able to influence and inspire women across the world.

Anna, is sure to impress the Miss Universe judges as she is currently completing her Masters Degree in Human Rights Law at Nottingham University, with sights of working for the United Nations. Anna’s passion for human rights is deeply engrained in her life with the many humanitarian causes that she supports, including having recently travelled to India to support a project called Sheroes Hangout; a café lounge that provides employment and a place of refuge for women who have survived acid attacks. Anna commented “my career in Human Rights Law goes hand in hand with what it means to be Miss Universe, and I would love to not only represent my country proudly on an international level, but winning the title and crown would be a platform to raise awareness of the fundamental and basic rights we have as humans.”

Anna was thrown a surprise party this weekend at London’s Hotel Xenia Autograph Collection. The Hotel ‘s general manager, Giacomo Battafarano, was inspired by Anna’s humanitarian efforts and commented “we are extremely excited to be partnering with Miss Universe GB for such a special event. Our hotel is the perfect place for such a special occasion. With a range of award winning food, elegant rooms and entertainment spaces. We support the advancement of these amazing woman wanting to make a difference to the world, and wish Anna all the luck in the world for the upcoming Miss Universe Pageant.”

The finals of Miss Universe will be held in Planet Hollywood’s Axis Theatre in Las Vegas on November 26th where a new winner will succeed current title holder, Iris Mitternaere, from France. The winner of Miss Universe 2017 will be based in New York City and will spend the year travelling the world, engaging in humanitarian and charitable causes and projects.
