Hope Spring water project to help community fight off cholera
Clean water advocacy and water poverty alleviation charity, Hope Spring handed over a clean water system, to the community of Akute Odo in Nigeria, on June the 16th. The Herefordshire based NGO completed the borehole powered water system within four weeks of starting the project.
The timely handing over happened, just as other communities not far from Akute Odo reported incidents of cholera outbreaks. Cholera is a deadly bacterial infection spread through contaminated water.
The clean water system gifted by Hope Spring and partners, including Ozami online cards consisted of an 80 metre deep borehole, fitted with a submersible pump which pumps water into a 4,000 litre water tank. The water tank is hosted on a four metre tall scaffolding. Gravity is used to push water through pipes to a fetching area, with four standpipes.
The Akute Odo community has attempted to construct a community borehole for a number of years, without success. The one hundred and eighty people strong community just could not find the required funds to construct a borehole water system. The community found Hope Spring water, proposed a partnership with the NGO to construct a borehole in their community, and the partnership resulted in the first borehole in the community's history.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony of the project, Hope Spring director in Nigeria Dr Rahmat Adebisi said “we are very pleased to complete and hand this project over to the community in Akute Odo. It will help improve the community’s health and hygiene. There have been reports of cholera in communities not too far from here”. Dr Rahmat added “Hope Spring thanks Mr Luqman Adekola, who co-funded the project with us”.
At the handing over ceremony of the project, leaders of Akute Odo expressed their gratitude to those who made the water project possible. They were particularly grateful that the time women and children of the community spend looking for clean water each day, will now be put to a productive use.
This project is the fourth clean water project completed by Hope Spring in 2024. You can find more information about their project on their website and social media pages.
