Hope Spring Announces Completion of Konela Borehole Project

Completion and handing over ceremony of the fourth borehole project of the year, was announced by Herefordshire clean water charity Hope Spring. The announcement was made on their blog on the 25th of April 2023. The project, a community borehole constructed in Konela village in the west of Sierra Leone, was completed and handed over on behalf of the charity by their contractor Benson Kandeh.

Sierra Leone, like most West African countries, faces challenges with adequate water and hygiene. Only 1% of Sierra Leone, a country with a population of 8 million have access to pipe borne water. Hope Spring founder and trustee Temi Odurinde said “we are delighted to contribute to water poverty alleviation in the Konela community, in our own little way”. Mr Odurinde added that “the new borehole will provide safe, clean water to a hundred or so people for years to come”.

The Konela community borehole was funded by donations from Hope Spring eCards business charity Christmas eCards campaign of 2023, which saw donations from a number of small businesses. Hope Spring eCards is the principal fundraising platform for the charity. Platform manager, Seun Olonade said “we are proud and humbled by the support businesses and individuals gave the platform in their Christmas charity eCard campaign of last year. She said the donation from the campaign has so far funded a number of boreholes in some of the most disadvantaged communities.

Hope Spring has worked with hundreds of communities in Africa, and has helped hundreds of thousands of people to access safe clean water since it was founded in 2016. The NGO hopes to help bring clean water closer to home for hundreds of thousands of Africans by the end of 2023. It is currently working on its next two borehole projects in Nigeria.
