Haag-Streit releases updated cleaning and disinfection procedures for Octopus perimeters

Harlow, UK – 20th May 2020 - Haag-Streit UK (HS-UK), the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic and optometry equipment, has released updated cleaning and disinfection procedures for the Octopus 600 and Octopus 900 perimeters.

This updated cleaning advice has been written by Haag-Streit Diagnostics, as a reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to a level of uncertainty regarding the transmission paths of infectious diseases, in particular COVID-19, it is essential to minimise any proven or potential risk of cross infection, especially for non-disposable medical devices, such as the Octopus 600 and Octopus 900.

As part of these updated disinfection procedures, and in order to comply with general hygiene requirements to prevent the transmission of infections, the response button, occluder, head rest, corrective lenses and chin rest must be disinfected prior to every examination.

In addition, if the cupola needs to be disinfected, the guidelines state it should be occasionally sprayed with a disinfectant using an atomiser spray. The surface should be slightly damp and care should be taken to avoid excess. The disinfectant should contain either 70% isopropyl alcohol or 70% ethanol and water. Additives, such as colouring and fragrance, must be avoided, as they risk damaging and staining the cupola.

These changes in the disinfection routine could have a big impact on both the Clinician and the Patient's health, especially now. There are disinfection guidelines available for many of the Haag-Streit products, including the; Haag-Streit Slit Lamp range and LENSTAR 900 biometer. There are also guidelines for slit lamp imaging equipment, including the; FM 300, IM 600 and IM 900.
