Harlow, UK – 13th March 2020 – Haag-Streit Academy hosted two successful slit lamp courses at the SpaMedica training facility in Bolton last week. The ‘Slit Lamp Basic Skills Course’ and ‘Slit Lamp Imaging Expert User Training’ took place on the 5th and 6th March 2020 and were both very well-received by delegates.

The ‘Slit Lamp Basic Skills Course’ focused on hands-on workshops for small groups. This allowed the Haag-Streit Academy team to concentrate on the individual training needs of the range of professional delegates, which included; optometrists, orthoptists and doctors in training. The agenda covered slit lamp set-up & controls and examination & illumination techniques, including Goldmann applanation tonometry and indirect fundoscopy using a Volk lens.

Delegates were able to claim 4 CPD points for their attendance on the half-day session and took part in comprehensive hands-on training using Haag-Streit gold-standard slit lamps.

The ‘Slit Lamp Imaging Expert User Training’ was attended by delegates from a wide range of professional backgrounds, including; nursing staff, ophthalmic photographers, optometrists, orthoptists and consultant ophthalmologists. It provided attendees with the skills necessary to achieve superior results in the clinically-challenging field of ophthalmic imaging. This expert level training supported new and existing practitioners using Haag-Streit imaging modules or other slit lamp imaging systems.

The one-day course offered 7 CPD points and featured lectures by Haag-Streit slit lamp imaging experts, alongside practical hands-on workshops. The practical sessions gave attendees the opportunity to examine their peers using state-of-the-art imaging devices. Haag-Streit Academy were delighted to be joined by Haag-Streit Diagnostics’, Steve Thomson, who was on-hand to share his expertise, contributing to the success of the day.

Grant Duncan, HS-UK Clinical Training Manager, said, “This was the first time we have delivered the ‘Slit Lamp Basic Skills Course’. We identified a need for this basic training in response to feedback from customers and previous delegates. The small group structure of the course allowed attendees to learn the basics and practice them in a calm and nurturing environment, with the Haag-Streit Academy expert team on-hand to guide them.”

Grant continued, “We are delighted with the success of both of the courses. We'd like to thank all our delegates for fully-engaging throughout both days. We'd also like to extend our thanks to the staff at SpaMedica for making us very welcome and for use of their excellent training facility.”

Haag-Streit Academy ran a competition during the ‘Slit Lamp Imaging Expert User Training’ to find the best image taken by a delegate. After much consideration, the winner was Robert Hancock, Specialist Ophthalmic Photographer at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, who captured an excellent image of a narrow slit corneal section (see image of Mr Hancock being presented his prize, and a well-deserved ‘elbow bump’, by Steve Thomson).
