Doctor Who Visits Tenerife

News provided by Pressat Wire on Wednesday 30th Sep 2015

The volcanic landscapes of Teide National Park and the colonial-style town of Garachico in Tenerife are some of the spectacular settings recently showcased in the new season of Doctor Who, broadcasting nationwide on BBC One.

The TARDIS officially landed in Tenerife earlier this year when Doctor Who and his production team spent three full days filming for series nine.

Fans of the TV cult show may have spotted the Doctor travelling not only through time and space, but also across some of the island's most breathtaking backdrops, during the first and second episodes of this hugely popular series. Out-of-this-world landscapes included the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Teide National Park, where he was filmed on the moon-like Mount Teide - Spain's tallest mountain - as well as the picturesque town of Garachico in the north, famed for its stately homes, convents and churches.

The Tenerife Film Commission, the brand of the Tenerife Tourism Corporation responsible for promoting the island as a filming location, provided help and support to the production team to shoot on the show-stopping island in the Canaries. Local film production and audiovisual companies also supported the crew during the shoot.

In addition to Doctor Who, Tenerife has been used as a film set for a number of box-office blockbusters. Famous films shot on the island include Fast & Furious 6; Clash of the Titans and its sequel Wrath of the Titans; and, more recently, Ma Ma, a movie starring Penélope Cruz due to be released later this month.
