Day of Prayer and Fasting for an End to the Coronavirus Pandemic
“Twenty-Four Hours with the Lord”
Bishop Philip Egan of the Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth will hold a Day of ‘Prayer and Fasting’ for an End to the Coronavirus Pandemic. The Day is called “Twenty-Four Hours with the Lord” and is taking place on Friday 27th November 2020.
Explaining why he wished to hold the day, Bishop Philip said: “We can pray earnestly for a speedy end to the pandemic, for the safety and protection of all, especially our family and friends, for the health of the sick and the strength of those who care for them, for those suffering financially or in other ways from the pandemic, for patients in hospitals and the residents of care-homes, for all medical staff and key workers, for government leaders, scientists and advisors, for the discovery of an effective, ethically-sourced, vaccine, for patience, perseverance and mental well-being and for all who have died and those who mourn them”.
There will be a twenty-four hour long programme of Masses, prayer, Rosary and Eucharistic Adoration at the Catholic Cathedral of St John the Evangelist in Portsmouth, including an all-night vigil, of which Bishop Philip has invited all people of good will to join in as much as they can online.
Bishop Philip hopes that parishes across the Diocese will “replicate as much of the programme as possible and provide various opportunities for individuals to pay a visit to their parish for a time of private prayer.”
Although the day was planned before the second lockdown he continued: “The Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours and the Liturgy of the Passion will have to be celebrated without a congregation present, but many other elements such as Eucharistic Exposition, the Rosary etc., counting as private prayer, can still go ahead as planned. It will be an opportunity for us as a Diocese to pray for all our intentions.”
