Countdown to the First Ever Cricket Tournament for street children in Nepal
Samjad, who is 13 years old, can't wait for the big day. He said: "We will make new friends and meet big brothers. We will have lots of fun."
On the 12th of April, children's homes from across Nepal will compete in a cricket tournament to celebrate International Day for Street Children. This unique, first of its kind competition will bring together 18 children's home teams from across Southern Nepal. This aims not only to provide a memorable day for the children involved, but also to raise awareness of the plight of street children in Nepal where an estimated 5,000 young people suffer on the streets.
The tournament is being organised by Our Sansar, a UK-based international development charity committed to helping the world's poorest communities lift themselves out of poverty.
Julia Krepska, founder of Our Sansar said: "We are very excited about the cricket tournament and the opportunity it gives the children to experience something that, to other kids, is a normal part of growing up.
"Living on the street has meant that, before now, these kids have been unable to attend school, eat regular meals or make solid and lasting relationships. The tournament is a great chance to learn vital skills, such as team spirit, sportsmanship and determination.
"We hope that the tournament will have a lasting impact on the children taking part and will contribute to a secure foundation for their future development."
Preparing for the competition has already had a positive impact on the boys at Our Sansar's children's home. 11-year-old Karan said: "I love when everyone plays together…I am always motivated. I want to be a winner and it's always fun to play cricket. I also want to learn how to play and teach others."

Julia continued: "We desperately need help to support the children in our care and to expand our programme to help as many children as possible. I would therefore like to make an appeal to anyone passionate about the wellbeing of children and ask that they support not only our cricket tournament, but our home and give these boys a bright future."
The cricket tournament, held to coincide with the Consortium for Street Children's annual International Day for Street Children, will take place in Chitwan and Hetauda. To find out more and to support this initiative, please visit https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/cricket-for-street-children/
