Charity and RDC Connect to Launch Electronic Recycling Programme
News provided by R D Trading Ltd T/A RDC on Monday 9th Dec 2013
Europe’s largest computer recycling organisation RDC and ENABLE Scotland have partnered up to launch a new website which helps members and supporters to recycle their old computers and electronic gadgets whilst also generating funds for the learning disability charity.
Furthermore a simple calculator enables you to see what the donation will be. You can then choose to drop off your computer at a one of 5250 collection points around the UK.
Users can be safe in the knowledge that it does not expose them to identity theft and internet fraud. Prior to recycling and re-using any devices, all that data is properly removed protecting any personal information.
Electronic waste is a growing issue which in 2006 the United Nations Environmental Program estimated would reach 50 million tonnes a year worldwide. Computer systems represent a large proportion of the growth with more being utilised in home and business with diminishing life-cycles. As computer upgrades increase in frequency and people expect more service from each new generation old computers become obsolete faster and thus without action an ever growing surplus of unused computers and laptops fill lofts and once uncluttered office space.
In the same year the WEEE directive was implemented by the Environment Agency to reduce the amount of electronic waste being disposed of instead of recycled or reused. On reflection it seems remarkable a product, the result of a lengthy and expensive manufacturing process, is simply dumped in landfill when it no longer fulfils the requirements of its first owner.
Moreover the quality of modern component design and manufacturing means life expectancy and value of service can be extended for many years even if the original host survives mere months. Yet all computers can be safely recycled and most can be reused after professional refurbishment. By donating your computer to ENABLE Scotland you are helping us to help the environment as well as providing cash funds. Your donation also helps with:
• Less toxic chemical emissions
• Allows people to buy computers at affordable prices
• Reduces landfill
• Enables reuse of natural resources (rather than mining for more)
• Conserves energy used in the manufacturing process
ENABLE Scotland have worked with RDC, Europe’s largest computer recycling organisation, to produce the recycling portal website. You can visit the portal at http://www.rdc.co.uk/partners/enable-scotland.
Ashley Bird, Consumer Business Manager RDC said: “RDC and Enable Scotland are pleased to be able to offer the best possible recycling solution whilst helping Enable Scotland continue its vital work with children and adults with learning disabilities.”
Hazel McIlwraith , Assistant Director of Fundraising for ENABLE Scotland said “We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with RDC to undertake such a worthwhile recycling challenge with the added incentive that funds will go to ENABLE Scotland. The money raised will allow us to continue improving the lives of people who have learning disabilities by supporting people to work, live and participate in their local community."
