Battersea Power Station Sparking Creativity Around The World With Over 500 Pieces Of Art Submitted For Inaugural 'Battersea Art Station' Weekend Exhibition
On behalf of the Battersea Power Station shareholders, Battersea Power Station Development Company ("BPSDC") is delighted to announce that an outstanding figure of over 500 pieces of art have been submitted from around the world, to the first 'Battersea Art Station' exhibition which is being held at Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) from Friday 25th (preview only) – Sunday 27th September 2015. Just under 400 artists, both amateur and professionals entered a wide range of art that had been inspired by the iconic Battersea Power Station to the weekend celebration hosted by BPSDC.
Battersea Art Station opened for entries in June 2015 welcoming professionals and amateurs (16-25 and 26 +) to submit their creative interpretations of the listed building in the hope of having them selected to be exhibited for free at this one–off event held at BAC. Over the past two months there has been an unprecedented influx of creative pieces submitted, cementing the fact that the iconic Power Station has an incredible place in the heart of not only Londoners, but also people around the globe, with entries coming in from as far as New Zealand and Canada.
Art submitted has been varied, with everything from striking black and white photography, poetry, film, contemporary neon interpretations, classic oil paintings to cast iron sculptures. The selected art will be exhibited to the general public and available to buy over the weekend of 25th – 27th September at BAC with 20% income of sales going to local arts charities including BAC Beatbox Academy, World Heart Beat Music Academy, Theatre503 and BAC. The exhibition is free for the general public and the art prices will range from £10 up to £10,000.
Rob Tincknell, Chief Executive Officer of BPSDC said "We have been amazed to watch the public response to this event as the incredible quality of artwork has kept on arriving. We have always known the significance of this building for Londoners but to have submissions from all over the world just goes to show the global reach of this historic icon. We are delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate all the creativity that the Power Station generates. This is just a taste of the exciting cultural and artistic plans that are being created for the new Battersea Power Station neighbourhood."
On Friday 25th September, prizes will be announced for 'Best in Class' in the three different categories at a special preview event. A panel of judges will award cash prizes (£1k for professionals and £500 for amateur classes) as well as the unique opportunity to display a piece of their art in a public space at Circus West, the first phase of the Battersea Power Station development.
In addition to the exhibition, the weekend will also feature a number of exciting activities on each day providing entertainment for all ages. Highlights include a 3D Lego Big Build of Battersea Power Station, featured art works from the Royal College of Art and pieces from the Wandsworth Borough Collection, live printmaking with the up and coming 'Print Wagon', musical performances, special Family Saturday activities including BAC's 'The Bees Knees' indoor play space, on site construction & architectural photography exhibition from View Pictures, a Battersea Power Station inspired brunch and Sunday film screening programme. BAC's well-known Scratch Bar will have food and drinks available to purchase for guests throughout the weekend.
The exhibition will be held at Battersea Arts Centre, Lavender Hill, London, SW11 5TN from Friday 25th (preview only) – Sunday 27th September 2015. Admission is free and the exhibition is open from 10am – 5pm each day.
