Art Dubai 18th - 21st March 2015
Victoria Miro returns to Art Dubai for the third time [A33, Arena Hall] with a solo presentation by London-based artist Idris Khan.
A highlight of the display will be Khan's monumental piece Seven Times (2010), a floor installation of 144 sandblasted steel cubes with layered Arabic inscriptions. Idris Khan is deliberately echoing Carl Andre's 144 Graphite silence. Repetition has always been central to his practice, particularly the 'formal aesthetic power of stylised ritual'. The version displayed at Art Dubai mirrors the installation at the British Museum during the course of 'Hajj: Journey to the Heart of Islam', which was adapted by the artist from the original and consists of 49 cubes.
The stand will also feature two large stamp paintings for which Khan is so well known. These intensely dark, dense constellations of words – one written in English and another in Arabic – suggest a contained energy emanating from a central point. Transcending the medium of painting, the works have a sculptural quality, existing in a fluxus between an inward, secret infinity and an outward explosion of meaning.
Victoria Miro will also show two new works on paper, created specially by Khan for this presentation.
Khan will have a solo exhibition at Victoria Miro Mayfair in May 2015.
