New LoRa module monitors devices while increasing the range of other smart monitors in the area

Global technology leader Laird (LRD: London) announces today it has created a new Enterprise Internet of Things (EIoT) module with both LoRa and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity which will expand connectivity for enterprise devices while helping others remain more connected.

The RM1xx from Laird is able to send data up to 5 Kilometers (3.1 miles) over the LoRa protocol. For enterprise users like an electric company for example, this eliminates the need to drive a car to each house when it's time to read the meter. Now through the RM1xx the meter can communicated with a LoRa gateway within 5 Kilometers and send the encrypted information securely back to headquarters. The savings in employee time, gasoline, and fleet management will be substantial.

In another application, like a smart city parking lot, the RM1xx can connect with BLE sensors at each parking space. Acting as a gateway it can then relay that information back to a central server. BLE sensors consumer very little energy, each parking space sensor can last for years on a single coin cell battery, saving the management company time and money replacing batteries.

“There are literally hundreds of applications where the RM1xx can supply real-time data from multiple BLE sources to a central server,” explains Senior Vice President of Laird's Connectivity Solutions, Scott Lordo. “The versatility, longevity, and 5 Kilometer communication range make this ideal for Home Security, Agricultural, Industrial, and Utility applications where assets need to be monitored or tracked with long durations between communications.”

The RM1xx also features Laird's field proven, event driven smartBASIC programming language. The smartBASIC language encapsulates the challenges associated with embedded design, simplifies module integration, significantly reduces OEM development risk, and speeds time to market.

Lordo adds, “With the RM1xx, the Enterprise Internet of Things is more connected than ever before.”
