New Life held its second fundraising golf day of the year on Friday 5th August at Donnington Valley Golf Club, Newbury raising a staggering £27,000.

The event was a complete success with 50 teams of four, totalling 200 players.

The winning team was ‘Only The Breast’ from Clere Golf Newbury.

The longest drive was won by Shaun Thorp from Hungerford.

Nearest to the pin was won by Mickey Cummins from Newbury.

CEO Trevor Goodall was delighted with the success of the day saying ‘It was another fantastic golf day, our 28th now. So much money was raised for sick and premature babies that every penny makes a difference. We have projects at Basingstoke and Royal Berkshire at the moment and recent equipment bought has included a ‘CritiCool’ unit which is used to cool down the brains of very sick babies to help prevent brain injury, and a transport incubator to transport very sick babies to specialist units after delivery.

What stood out for me on the day were the numerous smiles on the course and the fantastic generosity of the players who continue to support the event each year. I am just overwhelmed by the success of the day and the amount of money raised.’

The players then enjoyed food and drink in the newly refurbished Post Barn which included an auction, a raffle and team prizes. The auction included a week’s stay in a beautiful property in Padstow which was donated by a New Life supporter.

The next charity golf day will be held at Calcot Golf Club on 9th September.

Other forthcoming events for anyone who would like to take part or support include a New Life Kayaking Challenge on Loch Lomond on 13th August, and the New Life World Prematurity Ball at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday 19th November.

Notes to editors

Each year around 80,000 babies are born prematurely according to statistics published by Bliss. This means that over 2 million premature babies have been born in the UK since the charity began 26 years ago.

The charity was set up in 1995 after Trevor’s twin boys, Joshua and Samuel were born prematurely sadly dying shortly afterwards.
