UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants: Six Critical Perspectives

Monday 19 September, 2016

As world leaders gather at UN HQ for a summit
on refugees and migrants, 19 September 2016, the United Nations University Migration Network (UNU MN) analyses the challenges and opportunities of the summit. Written by UNU migration professors and researchers, a new blog series covers the debate from six critical angles:

  1. Migration governance and policy: "What Will Be the Legacy of Alan Kurdi’s Death?"
  2. Forced migration: "How to Walk the Talk to End Forced Migration?"
  3. Migration and environment: "Shoring Up Communities and Commitments"
  4. Migration and health: "Why Migrant Vulnerability Is a Community Health Issue"
  5. Migration and culture: "Migration and the Power of Culture"
  6. Migration and development: "Why It’s Time to Get Serious about Migration and Development"

Each post ends with recommendations to policymakers on how to improve international coordination, with a focus on protecting the most vulnerable. Throughout the series, UNU fellows refer directly to the summit's draft outcome document -- to ensure maximum feasibility and relevance.

A single roundup post will follow shortly after the summit. Read the full series here: https://migration.unu.edu/publications/articles
