Laptops for the Vulnerable Initiative aims to tackle loneliness

JUNE 22, 2020 - For those with no access to laptops or the internet, digital exclusion is a reality that impacts day to day life. Without access to search engines, social media, job searches, and educational opportunities, the digitally excluded lose connections with the world around them. The Laptops for the Vulnerable Initiative by SocialBox.Biz is tackling digital exclusion to reduce loneliness and build well connected communities.

Through the Laptops for the Vulnerable Initiative, SocialBox.Biz partners with community schools, councils, and companies to accept used no longer needed but still functioning laptops. These laptops are wiped clean and loaded with open source software before being donated through partnerships with charitable organisations such as Age UK London, The Passage, Working Chance and others.

Through the coronavirus pandemic, virtually everyone has been impacted by isolation to some degree. For the elderly and other groups who don’t have access to laptops, the results of isolation are even worse.

Isolation is closely tied with poor mental health. Elderly people are at a particular risk for mental health issues as they are one of the largest groups suffering with isolation currently. With laptops at their disposal, elderly people and other vulnerable groups can experience immersive connection with their friends and loved ones and stay integrated in their community.

Right now, SocialBox.Biz is looking for new partners to participate with their no longer needed but still useful tech. More information can be found at https://www.socialbox.biz/.
