Cycling charity Life Cycle UK received a golden seal of approval this week, after being invited to meet with Olympic medal winners from Team GB at an event in London.
The charity, whose “Bike Back” project at HMP Bristol teaches prisoners the skills to refurbish unwanted bicycles, was invited to a celebration event at the House of Commons after being shortlisted for this year’s National Lottery Awards.
At the event, “Bike Back” received the thumbs up from cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy, boxers Joe Joyce and Joshua Buatsi, Taekwondo silver medallist Lutalo Muhammad and Paralympians Anne Dickins and Lauren Rowles.
The charity is seeking funding to continue its innovative work at Bristol Prison, whose Lottery funding is due to end in 2017. “Bike Back” saves over 300 unwanted bicycles from landfill each year and refurbishes them for use by local people, whilst enabling prisoners to earn City & Guilds accredited qualifications in cycle mechanics.
The public can support the scheme by purchasing an affordable refurbished bike, booking onto a bike maintenance course, or - for those with prior mechanical experience -volunteering to help inside the prison workshop.
