Athlete's Heroic Animal-Rescue Attempt Recognised by PETA
Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire – For carrying an injured doe 2 miles after discovering she couldn't move, Olympic medallist Greg Rutherford will receive a Gold Heart Award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
Rutherford discovered the immobile animal while out walking his dogs and couldn't bear to leave her. He then carried the doe, whom he later named Doris, to his home, where he called the local animal hospital for help. Although she was later humanely euthanised because of the severity of her injuries, staff at the animal hospital report that Rutherford's actions prevented Doris from experiencing a prolonged and painful death.
"Greg Rutherford is a gold medallist who showed he also has a heart of gold", says PETA Director Mimi Bekhechi. "We hope his actions will serve as an inspiration to others to help animals in need."
