Boohai’s upcoming single We Build These Mountains finds its spark in an unexpected place: a borrowed 1952 Gibson guitar with deep roots in Nashville’s music scene. The guitar was entrusted to him by friend Chance McCoy — a Grammy-winning artist, producer and film composer from the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia.
The instrument has played on countless Nashville sessions, toured the world, and is now safely back in West Virginia in McCoy’s new studio, where he is producing a host of acclaimed acts. But before returning home, the vintage Gibson helped ignite Boohai’s latest song.
The single follows last summer’s album Entropy for Beginners — a sprawling supergroup project featuring more than 50 musicians from across the globe. Where that record built a vast, multi-layered tapestry, We Build These Mountains is stripped-back, lo-fi and soulful: largely just voice and guitar, with rhythmic textures from Bill Coyne — formerly of Welsh band Murry the Hump, one of the bands central to the Cool Cymru movement of the 1990s alongside Super Furry Animals, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, and Catatonia.
The connection between Boohai and Coyne stretches back decades: their bands crossed paths multiple times in the late 1990s, when Murry the Hump and Boohai’s former indie outfit Boohai Soul were both playing the London circuit. This new collaboration closes a long creative circle.
“That Gibson had a sound unlike anything I’d played before, and it arrived at exactly the right moment. As soon as I picked it up, the song just poured out in one take — raw, lo-fi, and a total contrast to the multi-layered world of Entropy for Beginners. Writing it felt like returning to my roots as a singer-songwriter, and since then, the song has taken on an even deeper meaning with everything that’s happened in my life.” Boohai
We Build These Mountains also marks the first release on new indie label Bron Yr Aur Beats, founded in Machynlleth to support distinctive, independent voices and future collaborations.
