Today see’s start of The Commonwealth Games, and the eagle eyed amongst you may see a very familiar face in tonight’s opening ceremony (my lips are sealed, you will have to watch!)
Glasgow 2014 looks set to be the most inclusive Commonwealth Games in history, with 22 medals across para-sports up for grabs.
Here at UKSA, we’re particularly excited that athletes with learning disability will take part in the Commonwealth Games for the first time ever! S14 swimmers from across the UK, which is the classification given to swimmers with learning disability will compete in the men’s 200m freestyle S14 this Saturday (26th July).
Taking part in the event are three swimmers who have been classified by the UK Sports Association for people with learning disability are:
Twenty-four-year-old Craig Rodgie representing Scotland. When his selection to the team was announced he tweeted: “I can proudly say that’s me on the swim team for @Team_Scotland for #Glasgow2014”
Nineteen-year-old Jack Thomas representing Wales, this week he tweeted: “Can’t wait to get racing now, feeling fantastic in the water #CWG2014 #GoWales”
Fifteen-year-old Tom Hammer representing England. He said: "I'm well excited about the competitions this summer. It's better than going on holidays and a great chance to represent my country.”
Heat 1 takes place at 11.05am, with the final taking place at 7.29pm with live coverage on the BBC!
