Asda Money Highlights the Importance of Quality Travel Insurance Cover

Tuesday 25 June, 2013

Asda Money highlights the importance of putting the right travel insurance plan in place, after recent research revealed that four out of five Brits(1) head overseas without securing the right level of cover.

With the average costs of medical treatment abroad, coming in at a staggering figure of £2,040(2), Asda Money reveals why quality travel insurance cover could stand to make UK travellers significant savings and well as offering them peace of mind when they are away from home.

Medical expenses

2011 figures from the Association of British Insurers reveal that travel insurers paid out a staggering total of £5.3 million(3) each week to covering medical expenses for UK holidaymakers who fell ill abroad.

With payouts for medical treatment for medical conditions ranging from heart problems to allergic reactions running into thousands of pounds, taking out an appropriate level of travel insurance, and finding the right travel insurance quote, is essential.

While cover for medical treatment is key for any destination you plan to visit, it is particularly crucial in the US, where a minimum cover level of £2m(1) is recommended due to the high cost of the American healthcare system.

Cancellations and delays

Many travel insurance policies will cover the cost of cancellation fees if you are unable to go away on holiday as the result of illness or the loss of your job. It’s important to ensure that you take out travel insurance cover straight away, as you may not know when you may need to alter your plans.

Similarly, the majority of travel insurers will also offer compensation when you are delayed at the airport beyond a specified period of time.

Luggage

If you have a number of expensive items such as computer tablets and cameras in your luggage it’s important that your level of cover reflects this.

Research shows that just one in five people(4) have the right level of cover for their belongings, further emphasising the need to match your baggage cover to value of items you will be bringing on holiday.

Asda Travel Insurance starts from just £4 and includes unlimited medical expenses
