Nomad Retail Manager, Elise Land, says; “Since opening a year ago we feel we have become part of the junction community, people kindly donate lovely items to us - you can be sure we've stocked everything at some point…”

The nominated charity for the 2017 Lincoln Knights’ Trail, The Nomad Trust, have taken their Knight on a tour of Lincoln.

Last week, the Nomad Knight paid a visit to some very special supporters - the organisations who kindly sponsored the Knight.

The Nomad Team collected the Knight from Denby Transport to start its travels with Brewin Dolphin, followed by Running Imp and Bruce Fine Papers.

The Knight hosted an evening at The Showroom Conference Centre to greet members of the Lincoln Women’s Institute, before spending the following day at Saul Fairholm Accountants.

For its last visit, the Knight finished up with Arora Marketing, who arranged a ‘mini-knights-trail’ for the children of Navenby.

The Knight itself was on display at the Urban Angels Hair Salon, with a range of crafts and information on offer at Cook & Sleep Showroom, about the Knights Trail, Battle of Lincoln and The Nomad Trust.

The design of the Knight, entitled ‘Not all Stories are Black and White’, was inspired and designed in conjunction with people who stay at The Nomad Trust’s shelter who wanted to give an insight in to homelessness.

The colourful design leads up to the colours of the Nomad Trust and is based on maps. This could be interpreted as the streets they walk on or the map of how they got to where they are now. It is a spectrum of colours to represent how everyone and their stories are so different.

The knight has messages from the service users who are, or have been homeless in Lincoln, such as ‘keeping warm can be a luxury’.

The Knight can be seen at The Nomad Trust’s Sincil Street Charity Shop this week, until Thursday 27th April.

Could you donate money, goods or even your time?

<![CDATA[ Local Youth keep moving forward – Parkour’s formal recognition as a Sport ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/local-youth-keep-moving-forward-parkours-formal-recognition-as-a-sport-dba90299aa42e3e65e4431f0b6ea48ff/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/local-youth-keep-moving-forward-parkours-formal-recognition-as-a-sport-dba90299aa42e3e65e4431f0b6ea48ff/ Wednesday 12 April, 2017

Members of The Showroom Parkour Club are looking to the future with excitement after Parkour, the discipline of movement, has now been officially recognised as a sport by the UK’s Sports Councils.

The formal recognition of Parkour/Freerunning as a sport came on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, announced by the Minister for Sport, Tracey Crouch, at Westminster Academy’s L.E.A.P. Park – currently the UK’s largest outdoor Parkour and FreeRunning facility.

“I want people to get out there and find the sport and physical activity that appeals to them and Parkour is certainly a fun, creative and innovative option” said Tracey.

“I am pleased that it has been recognised as a sport… The sport promotes movement and using the great outdoors as a space to get active in and I encourage people to don their trainers and give it a go.”

Joe Hicks, Head Coach for The Showroom Parkour Club, explains his definition of Parkour;

“Parkour, also known as FreeRunning or by the original French name of ‘L'art Du Déplacement’, is the discipline of navigating obstacles through efficient and controlled movement relevant to an individual.”

He describes Parkour as closer to a Martial Art; “we teach all of our students as individuals, aiming to develop general physical literacy, but also self-restraint and the individuals’ ‘vision’ – their ability to confidently understand their own physical abilities and limits.”

“We run over a dozen sessions a week, coaching over one hundred and fifty young people with particular experience in SEND+, Youth Engagement and Alternative Education provision.”

“Our sessions encourage participation in non-competitive physical activity, creativity, problem solving, and self-awareness whilst continuing to build our friendly, respectful pro-social community of young, next-generation Traceurs*!” (*Parkour Practitioners)

Throughout Parkour’s massive growth over the past two decades, the media coverage of the sport has led to controversy and misinterpretation of what the sport actually is.

“It is not the extreme sport everyone thinks it is… Yes, you’ll see athletes doing big stunts on TV, flipping over buildings for the media, but what you won’t see in the mainstream media is the hard work that got them there; the thousands of hours spent training, repeating those jumps and conditioning their bodies.”

“Anyone can jump off something big, but that doesn’t mean they’re doing Parkour… A Parkour practitioner is more likely to say ‘not today’ and step away than to take a silly risk.”

The sport has recently been targeted at the ‘over-60’s’ demographic by The Parkour Dance Company based in London, with sessions focused around maintaining mobility and reducing hospital fall admissions.

The Showroom Parkour Club hopes to offer similar opportunities outside of its regular clubs, and has recently announced it will be taking part and hosting a Parkour ‘Jam’ for the international ‘WeJumpTheWorld Day’ – an annual event to recognise and promote Parkour.

The club’s WeJumpTheWorld Event will be offering a number of one-off community workshops, specifically aimed at; under-fives, parents with children, and the older generation. A speed-competition as well as training and conditioning opportunities for regular members will also be on offer.

“We’re really excited to be able to introduce Parkour to a much wider audience…” says Joe,

“These are the first Parkour sessions of their kind to be delivered in Lincolnshire, and we can’t wait to see new groups of local people exploring how they can move.”

Sunday April 2 2017 saw hundreds of participants take on Lincoln’s annual 10K run, including a team fundraising for The Nomad Trust.

The team, led by Fundraising Officer Rachael Hewitt, raised over £1000 towards the build of their new supported accommodation facility, The Nomad Centre.

‘It’s the first time I’ll have attempted a 10k event and it’s going to be a challenge to say the least...’ Said Rachael on the run-up to the event.

‘However, I was spurred on by some great people supporting the charity who joined our team!’

‘It was a brilliant event with an amazing atmosphere; the phenomenal support for the cause from the crowd really kept us going…’

‘A massive thank you to everyone who supported us by donating or taking part in the event, including the HomeLet team who ran in support of Nomad.’

Dawn Barron who ran for the team also supports The Nomad Trust as a trustee for YMCA Lincolnshire. She has taken part in many fundraising events fundraising for the charity, including last month’s Sleep Easy event that raised over £20,000 for the project.

The Nomad Trust are a local, Lincoln-based charity who operate Lincolnshire’s only direct-access emergency accommodation for rough sleepers alongside support services.

Part of YMCA Lincolnshire, The Nomad Trust also operates a Furniture warehouse conducting collections, deliveries and house clearances, as well as two charity shops based on Sincil Street and Moorland Avenue who’s income supports the night shelter.

Rachael Hewitt challenges the local community to get involved in helping raise money for the new Nomad Centre; ‘through fundraising, volunteering, donating funds to the cause or goods to our charity shops – you can help us to help the homeless.’

‘Funds raised will assist us to create essential facilities to support the homeless in Lincoln, helping us achieve our aim to open much needed day facilities and new emergency overnight accommodation.’

YMCA Lincolnshire & The Nomad Trust raises over £16,500 for homeless people as part of the national YMCA Sleep Easy Week

Local people have so far raised over £16,500 for YMCA Lincolnshire at a local fundraising event last Friday. The event saw 85 people spend a night sleeping rough in the grounds of Lincoln Cathedral, sheltering in cardboard boxes from the wind, rain and bitter cold.

The event, ran annually by the YMCA, attracted more than double the participants of last year’s SleepEasyLincoln16, beating the fundraising target of £10,000 by over 50%, with generous support and donations still coming in following the event.

YMCA Lincolnshire have ran SleepEasy events for the past seven years, however this is the first event to be part of national YMCA Sleep Easy Week, that saw 15 YMCAs come together over seven days promote to their work with young people and the homeless.

Money raised from the event will help YMCA Lincolnshire and The Nomad Trust increase the provision of accommodation and support services for the most vulnerable people in our society.

The Nomad Trust, part of YMCA Lincolnshire, is looking to improve the support they provide through a new direct access and supported accommodation project – The Nomad Centre. Funds raised through Sleep Easy will go directly to supporting the new build.

Sleep Easy event organiser, Rachael Hewitt, said: “This was the first time we teamed up with other YMCAs for YMCA’s National Sleep Easy Week. We are amazed with the level of support we have received, from local businesses, organisations and individuals. We’re thrilled with the success and I’d like to thank everyone who took part and spent the night out with us.”

“There is still time to support the cause – you can donate to #SleepEasyLincoln17 by visiting: www.lincsymca.co.uk/sleepeasy - now, it’s not about supporting those who took part in Sleep Easy, it’s about supporting those who have no choice but to sleep rough on a daily basis.”

Mindy Arora who participated in the Sleep Easy event, raising over £1,500 in sponsorship, shared her thoughts;

“You can never truly understand how difficult it is being young and homeless, unless you experience even a fraction of what it is like sleeping out.”

It’s definitely made me realise the hardships these people face on a daily basis – the struggle for things most of us take for granted – warmth, shelter and food…”

A number of participants have already expressed their desire to Volunteer for The Nomad Trust, and take part in next year’s SleepEasy, explains YMCA Lincolnshire’s Fundraising Officer, Emma Hume.

“To see the local community coming together in support of those most in need is amazing… Whether you can afford to donate to the cause, or offer some time to volunteer, your support is greatly appreciated.”

“We would like to offer particular thanks to Spaldings Ltd, Stokes Tea and Coffee, East Coast Homeless Outreach, Running Imp, Nomad Retail, Lincoln Cathedral, Go Outdoors and RAF Waddington for supporting the event.”

Members of RAF Waddington supported The Nomad Trust and YMCA Lincolnshire, with over thirty servicemen taking part in charity work across the county.

The Volunteers, who pledged their support as part of their community support programme, were stationed at a number of YMCA and Nomad Trust facilities to support the charities, as well as putting their maintenance skills to the test.

The Nomad Trust is a local Lincoln based charity, which operates the county’s only direct access night shelter as well as two charity shops to support their services.

Retail Manager, Elise Land, explained how ‘both retail teams, staff and volunteers have commented on the focus of each individual on each day. They tackled all the tasks thoroughly and at speed! They were all a real credit’

Maintenance Worker, Jon Eagers, from YMCA Lincolnshire’s The Showroom commented on their ‘brilliant work’; ‘a big thank you to the teams that turned up, it’s great to have such highly skilled volunteers!’

The RAF support enabled a number of exciting developments to take place, including refurbishment within the YMCA Housing department, groundworks at The Showroom, sorting a large volume of stock and supporting retail operations.

A team of four also assisted at YMCA’s Beginnings Daycare Centre, based in Gainsborough. Childcare manager, Zara Smith, was delighted with their work; ‘They painted our community room and hall areas and also dug a vegetable patch for the children to use. The children are very excited about their vegetable patch and they have already decided that they will be planting carrots, tomatoes and peppers!’

‘The people that attended were fabulous. Their hard work has helped to improve the look of the setting and has laid the foundations for some valuable learning opportunities for the children.’

The team expressed their wishes in returning to help YMCA Lincolnshire and The Nomad Trust in the future.

YMCA Lincolnshire and The Nomad Trust’s annual Sleep Easy event is taking place this Friday, with around 100 individuals spending a night sleeping rough raising sponsorship in aid of the homeless.

YMCA Lincolnshire have provided a local youth football club with team hoodies, as well as a trip to The Showroom Activity Centre, following the arson of their Youth Centre.

St Giles Youth Centre based at Swift Gardens, was intentionally burned to the ground last September, although no arrests have been made.

The fire, initially reported at around 10:30pm Friday 2nd September, was attended by multiple firefighter crews who worked in to the early hours of Saturday to put out the blaze.

The fire completely destroyed the youth centre as well as the equipment of various sports and activity groups based in the centre; it has been described as a ‘devastating blow’ to the youth provision in the area.

Lincoln EST Football Club provide sporting opportunities for young people across the Ermine, St Giles and Tower estates.

YMCA Lincolnshire, a local charity working primarily with the homeless and youth across the county, offered to support the team with new hoodies to replace the kit lost in the fire.

The team along with coaches were invited to an exclusive opening of The Showroom, where they were treated to free reign of the Activity Centre’s arcades, games and sports facilities.

‘We were delighted to offer the team a visit’ said James Walker, Activity Centre Manager at The Showroom.

‘We heard what happened to their youth centre; we know how important a safe place to go is to our local youth, and wanted to offer their young people something they could come and enjoy as a team.’

The group also enjoyed an adventure to The Showroom Climbing Centre; based in the same building, the youngsters were challenged by the county’s largest indoor climbing walls.

The event will take place in the grounds of the iconic Lincoln Cathedral from 7pm on Friday 3rd March 2017.

YMCA Lincolnshire is one of fifteen YMCAs across the country that have joined forces to raise awareness of homelessness during the first-ever national Sleep Easy Week.

The charity has hosted sleep-out events since 2010, with last year’s event raising over £10,000. These funds have helped maintain the support services of YMCA Lincolnshire and The Nomad Trust, who work with the most vulnerable people in our society.

The Sleep Easy event aims to raise awareness of homelessness, through encouraging people to sleep rough for one night.

Read Meme’s story - she joined us last year for her first Sleep Easy event;

‘Sleep easy was an experience that made me rethink how I view the homeless, it makes you see through the eyes of a homeless youngster for a brief moment. It has affected me deeply, to the degree I cried on the way home thinking on how awful life on the streets truly is and how harsh.’

‘From being looked through by early morning street cleaners thinking you're homeless, with sleeping bag under arm to seeing the actual homeless waking in shop doorways and moving their belongings for the day.’

‘I had an abusive childhood, I was lucky that I did not end up homeless like many children escaping an abusive or violent home life can.’

‘Everybody should experience the sleep easy sleepover at least once, I guarantee you; it will touch your heart for life.’

Helen Lloyd from Homelet, part of Barbon Insurance Group, has encouraged employees to form a fundraising team for the event; ‘so far, we have ten people sleeping easy in March!’

‘I’m not excited about the idea of sleeping rough, but I’m very excited to see the impact of the event itself.’ Said Joe Hicks, part of the event planning team.

‘It’s fantastic to see so many local supporters, both individuals and organisations, committing to this event in support of the homeless.’

‘We want to offer a final invitation to those individuals or organisations who are interested in taking part but who have not yet signed up yet – it’s not too late!’

‘Your one night of discomfort will make a lifetime of difference…’

The Run for All Lincoln 10K will take place on Sunday 2nd April, and the charity - which operates the county’s only emergency night shelter - is seeking support from those wanting to take part, as well as those already signed up.

Helen Lloyd from Homelet, part of Barbon Insurance Group, has arranged a team to take part, in support of the charity;

‘We have 25 employees who have signed up to run the 10K and raise awareness and funds for The Nomad Trust’

‘Barbon has sponsored their entry fee and will, as usual; double all the funds they raise, so we are hoping to kick of this year’s fund raising with some big numbers. So far, we also have ten people sleeping easy in March too!’

The Nomad Trust, which is part of YMCA Lincolnshire, are offering a free pre-event training programme with YMCA Lincolnshire’s Fitness Centre on St. Rumbold’s Street, Lincoln, to those who pledge to fundraise.

Funds raised through sponsorship will go towards funding the build of The Nomad Centre; a new facility with on-site support services in aid of the homeless, to include a day centre and single room emergency overnight accommodation.

Plans for the new build have been met with excitement and support from the local community, being seen as a much-needed provision for Lincoln.

Dawn Barron, local businesswomen and Trustee for YMCA Lincolnshire, will also be taking part on behalf of The Nomad Trust.

‘The new Nomad Centre is a project I’m very passionate about’ said Dawn;

Dawn also acts as chair of YMCA Lincolnshire’s Board Fundraising sub-committee, responsible for the capital appeal which will ensure the build of the centre.

‘It will be a fabulous addition to the city, to be able to help the homeless as much in the day as at night. We are not just trying to put a plaster on the problem; we’re not just getting people off the streets, we’re trying to help tackle the root causes of homelessness, and ultimately get them back in to regular accommodation.’

‘Last year took part in Sleep Easy and spent my first night ‘camping out’ – I have never camped before; those that know me well know it was a big challenge for me to spend the night in a sleeping bag, let alone on the streets.’

‘This year, I wanted another challenge; I’ve never run a race, never even walked a race before, so the Lincoln 10K will be another big challenge for me. I hope people know that and support me through the event’

If you are interested in joining The Nomad Trust’s Lincoln 10K Team, or if you are already signed up to take part but would be willing to run on behalf of The Nomad Trust, please email: fundraising@nomadtrust.org.uk

#SleepEasyLincoln2017 is YMCA Lincolnshire's annual fundraising event, where we challenge you to spend a night sleeping rough, so others' don't have to...

The event, to be held at Lincoln Cathedral on 3rd March 2017, encourages individuals to ‘spend a night sleeping rough, so others don’t have to.’

Participants will be invited to experience a night on the streets, raising sponsorship in support of Lincoln’s homeless and The Nomad Centre project.

YMCA Lincolnshire has hosted Sleep Easy nights since 2010, with last year’s event raising over £10,000. Money brought in has helped YMCA Lincolnshire and The Nomad Trust, which works with the most vulnerable people in our society.

The Nomad Trust, Part of YMCA Lincolnshire, is looking to improve the support they provide, through a new direct access and supported accommodation project – The Nomad Centre. Funds raised through Sleep Easy will go directly to supporting the new build.

YMCA Lincolnshire provides various services throughout the county, including housing, health and fitness, youth work, day-care and corporate services.

YMCA Lincolnshire is one of 133 local YMCAs in England and Wales that, together, support more than 200,000 young people every year.

It is hoped this year’s event will help YMCA Lincolnshire raise even more funds, as the numbers of rough sleepers of all ages continues to rise and pressures mount on the housing market.

“We are calling on the local community, old and young, to sign up to our Sleep Easy to help us support young people in our services today and into the future.” says Malcolm Barham, CEO of YMCA Lincolnshire.

“One night out can make a lifetime of difference.”

Musical Duo Mollie and Will to #buskforbeds this Thursday

Renowned Lincoln based musicians, Mollie and Will, will take to the streets this Thursday to launch their own campaign in support of The Nomad Trust - #buskforbeds.

They will be setting up from 08:30 on Lincoln High Street, between Marks & Spencer’s and The Waterside Shopping Centre.

The pair will be treating Christmas shoppers with their own take on old classics and modern hits.

Mollie and Will approached The Nomad Trust with their idea;

“Back in Summer we came up with the idea to busk for a day, to fund a big supermarket shop and give food out to those we thought to be homeless…” explains guitarist, Will.

“We were told about non-homeless people on the streets, and even people travelling in to Lincoln to beg, so we thought it better to join up with a local charity as a way to make sure we support those who are genuinely in need.”

“I always feel so sorry for them when we’re out busking” says Mollie.

She recalled one homeless person she met who asked for 50p to buy food – “I gave him £1 and he went running straight in to the nearest McDonalds and bought a burger...”

“It feels great giving someone a sandwich or a nice warm drink. It’d be even better to give them a bed for the night.”

Will added; “We’re young, local musicians – the community has supported us so much, so we wanted to give something back.”

“We didn’t know much about The Nomad Trust before we started looking for a charity to partner with, so we want to show what support is there for the homeless and raise awareness of how The Nomad Trust is tackling this issue.”

YMCA Lincolnshire and The Nomad Trust were recently given permission to build a new facility, The Nomad Centre, to increase the provision of services available to Lincoln’s homeless.

“We know homelessness is a big issue in Lincoln” says Emma Hume from YMCA Lincolnshire;

“We need the help of the public to highlight homelessness as a serious issue, and help us put a solution in place.”

Give your thoughts on The Nomad Centre and Homelessness in Lincoln at: www.lincsymca.co.uk/local-residents-questionnaire

The new build will be located opposite YMCA Lincolnshire’s St Rumbold Street site, offering direct access accommodation, supported housing and day-services.

As well as offering meeting and social spaces, The Nomad Centre will also include a medical triage unit, a training room and access to YMCA Lincolnshire’s Training department.

The Nomad Trust’s current provision based on Monks Road offers 22 beds in dormitory-style accommodation.

The new build will include 16 individual direct-access rooms, providing privacy and dignity for service users, as well as 40 supported-accommodation apartments encouraging independent living.

YMCA Lincolnshire joined with The Nomad Trust in 2013, to secure and sustain accessible tenancies across the county, as well as ensuring the permanence of Lincolnshire’s only emergency access night shelter.

Excitement is building for hundreds of young people across Lincoln, as YMCA Lincolnshire and The Showroom Activity Centre’s Parkour & Freerunning Club reveal its new sessions.

The Parkour Club runs on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, at The Showroom Activity Centre on Tritton Road, Lincoln.

With bookings opening at 10am on Thursday 1st September, the club has nearly double the number of spaces on offer and hopes to engage even more individuals in non-competitive physical activity.

Parents have described the club as ‘inspiring’, ‘encouraging’ and ‘accessible for all’.

Heidi, whose six year old son has been training with the club since March, says how his confidence “has grown so much” through Parkour.

“It has amazed me what he has been able to achieve!”

Oscar Coombes, The Showroom Parkour Club’s new coach, explains how; “Parkour and Freerunning are simply the disciplines of movement. All you need is yourself and some imagination!”

Parkour involves elements of running, jumping, climbing, rolling and inspires controlled, adaptive movement relative to the individual.

“Our clubs hope to teach young people how to realise what they are capable of” says Head Coach, Joe Hicks, who started coaching Parkour in Lincoln seven years ago.

The Showroom Parkour Club has worked with various partners, delivering sessions on behalf of Childrens’ Services, Youth Offending, Lincoln City and Lincolnshire County Councils, as well as many schools and activity groups across the county.

Alongside the club’s main weekly sessions, a further four upcoming sessions have been funded through the Sportivate programme.

The project, named Movin’ On Up, is targeted as an Inclusive club for those with social and cognitive difficulties or disabilities, such as ADD, ADHD and Autism. These sessions offer a quieter, more relaxed training environment.

YMCA Lincolnshire is asking local people to vote for one of its inspiring young people ahead of a prestigious national youth awards ceremony hosted this autumn by TV presenter, June Sarpong MBE.

The local youth charity, which has operated throughout the county for the past 147 years, has nominated YMCA young person, Rosie Marrows, as Young Leader of the Year in Youth Matters Awards 2016.

Youth Matters is YMCA’s national awards programme that has been an integral part of the charity’s calendar since 2009.

Rosie is up against four other young people from across the country within her award category. Other award categories include YMCA of the Year, Young Achiever of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year and Young Worker of the Year.

Rosie has been entered for the award because of her progress within and support of all projects she has been involved with; she has gone from using the centre as a youth member to being a fun and engaging volunteer.

She joined the theatre school as an 11-year-old girl, very shy and reserved but over the years has grown into a significant leadership role. Rosie is never late, never disrespectful and always super helpful. For the past two years she has been volunteering for our younger theatre school group (ages four to seven-years-old), called Little Stars. She is always here despite being a sociable teenage girl who is not only dealing with life’s trials and tribulations but also exam pressures, extracurricular activities and family.

Rosie volunteers for YMCA at other times as well. She has run karaoke nights, science workshops, music groups and been one of the charity’s best helpers. She also has a keen eye for noticing when young people are not in the best place in their life. She communicates any problems to YMCA and supports the young people through difficult times.

Rosie’s development over the past five years has been outstanding. She is by no means the most confident young person but everyone at YMCA has been blown away by her continued involvement within the organisation. She is a great role model for younger children and sets a great example to her peers. She is not super human and at times life has got her down. But she deals with it and more importantly she never lets it affect her involvement with the young people. Rosie will be turning 16 in October. Thanks to the way she has been involved in the showroom she is in a position to become a paid member of staff and we couldn’t be more proud of her!

Voting starts online at midnight on Thursday 4 August and runs until midnight on Monday 15 August. Votes cast by the public will be combined with judges’ choices and the top three nominees will be announced in September. All three will attend the finals night at the exclusive venue 8 Northumberland Avenue, in central London, where the winner will be announced.

Rosie said: “I am really excited to be nominated for such a significant award and to have reached this stage of the process.

“My life has changed so much since getting involved with YMCA and I hope everyone will support me and vote. To make it through to the final judging panel would be incredible.”

Youth Worker, Abigail Wright, described how ‘Rosie is always willing to go out of her way for others, doing so with a smile on her face. She’s a phenomenal asset and an inspiring young lady.’

Youth Matters celebrates the outstanding skills and achievements of young people from across the country. It also recognises the vital work that YMCAs deliver every day to help transform the lives of young people and give them a brighter future.

The Young Leader of the Year Award recognises a young person for their ability to make a real difference in their YMCA by bringing about positive change, working with vision and inspiring others.

YMCA Lincolnshire is asking local people to give them their backing ahead of a prestigious national youth awards ceremony hosted this autumn by TV presenter, June Sarpong MBE.

The local youth charity, which has operated across the county for the past 147 years, has been shortlisted as YMCA of the Year in Youth Matters Awards 2016.

Youth Matters is YMCA’s national awards programme that has been an integral part of the charity’s calendar since 2009.

YMCA Lincolnshire is up against four other YMCAs within its award category. Other award categories are Young Achiever of the Year, Young Leader of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year and Young Worker of the Year.

They have been entered for the award because YMCA Lincolnshire, like many YMCAs across the federation, operates in a number of diverse and varied areas, however our core provision has and always will be accommodation and support services for the most vulnerable people within our community.

In 2003, YMCA Lincolnshire merged with The Nomad Trust, a small local charity, to operate Lincolnshire’s only direct access night shelter for rough sleepers, supporting and securing the provision of services.

Earlier this year, we announced plans of a new £3m project to increase this provision, providing additional supported apartments, training, and health and social facilities. Named ‘The Nomad Centre’, it will be based directly opposite YMCA Lincolnshire’s headquarters, offering nearby fitness facilities, as well as further training opportunities.

Fundraising kicked off with Sleep Easy 2016, raising more than £10,000 towards the project, and YMCA Lincolnshire and The Nomad Trust have recently opened a second charity shop, retailing affordable clothing, furniture and household goods, to financially support the mission based work of the centre.

Malcolm Barham, Chief Executive of YMCA Lincolnshire, said: “We are overjoyed and excited to be nominated for such a significant award and to have reached this stage of the process.

“We hope everyone in the local community will vote for us as making it through to the final judging panel would be incredible.”

Youth Matters celebrates the outstanding skills and achievements of young people from across the country. It also recognises the vital work that YMCAs deliver every day to help transform the lives of young people and give them a brighter future.

The YMCA of the Year Award recognises a YMCA that has delivered in the past 12 months an innovative and inspiring local project, programme or scheme, which has created a tangible and positive impact on young people and the wider community.

YMCA Lincolnshire’s Woodlands Daycare Centre, based on Whitethorn Grove in Birchwood, will be holding an open day event this weekend, celebrating its 10 year anniversary.

Woodlands Daycare opened on 3rd January 2006, and has been delivering top quality, engaging childcare for the past ten years.

This Saturday, from 10am-1pm, Woodlands Daycare Centre will be open to view and explore. The team invites all past and present families it has worked with to attend.

Alongside family fun, activities games and arts and crafts, we will have our Bouncy Castle out for all to enjoy!

Carly Shaw, Senior Childcare Manager, has worked for Woodlands Daycare since its inception, and recalls the first day;

“When we first opened we had two to five families using our services and a team of three – we now have a team of ten staff, and are working with over fifty families from the local community.”

Woodlands Daycare is part of YMCA Lincolnshire, a local charity working to support some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community.

YMCA Lincolnshire is also dedicated to developing its staff, supporting Manager Carly through a BA Hons degree and her deputy in achieving Early Years Professional Status.

Over the years, Carly explains how they have “grown and developed” staff and apprentices, “who have undergone various professional developments such as specific speech and language training.”

“We have built up strong and positive working relationships with the school that we are attached to, Woodlands Infant and Nursery School, as well as local schools and colleges by offering them good quality work experience placements.”

YMCA Lincolnshire supports young people throughout their development in life, offering early years Childcare at Woodlands Daycare Centre in Birchwood and Beginnings Daycare based in Gainsborough.

The Showroom Activity Centre provides world class youth engagement, pioneering alternative education, working closely with schools and authorities.

Youth Nights are ran in the evenings, with extra-curricular activities for young people of all ages. The Showroom also offers diverse Volunteer and work placement opportunities.

YMCA Lincolnshire’s Fitness and Training Centre just in the city centre, located next to YMCA Lincolnshire’s Headquarters on St Rumbold Street, offers a gym, as well as both fitness-specific and workplace CPD qualifications.

YMCA Lincolnshire’s Parkour Club, based at The Showroom Activity Centre on Tritton Road, are chasing support of the local community to be named the UK’s Best Sports Project.

The group of Freerunners organised an outreach event which took place this Saturday, 16th June in the city centre around Lincoln Cornhill.

Members of the public of all ages came to try their hand at Rock Climbing, Parkour and Freerunning.

Parkour is the discipline of efficient movement that includes running, jumping, climbing, vaulting and rolling, as well as adaptive movements.

The Showroom’s Joe Hicks, who has coached Parkour and movement disciplines in Lincolnshire for the past seven years, has delivered sessions to various groups, including Youth Offending and Children’s Services, Lincolnshire County Council and many schools.

Joe says; “Parkour is accessible to everyone – all you need is yourself! …we’re encouraging participants to explore a new sport many might not have had the opportunity to try before.”

The event sought to encourage voting in support of Lincolnshire’s local Sports Project Finalists; YMCA Lincolnshire’s Parkour Club, in the final round of the prestigious National Lottery Awards 2016.

TV Personality, John Barrowman, National Lottery Awards Ambassador and Awards Presenter, explains how The Showroom Parkour Club “is up against six other finalists for Best Sports project, and is the only entrant from Lincoln in this category, competing for a £3,000 prize and the chance to feature on a BBC One show in September.”

“The National Lottery Awards celebrate and recognise the inspirational and life-changing impact of National Lottery funded projects. Each week National Lottery players raise more than £36 million for arts, sport, heritage and community projects across the UK.’

YMCA Lincolnshire’s Parkour Club is chasing votes after reaching the finals of the prestigious National Lottery Awards.

The freerunners, based at The Showroom Activity Centre, will battle it out with six other organisations from across the UK to be named Best Sport Project.

They are looking for local and national support throughout the last week of voting.

This Saturday, the team will be holding an outreach event on Lincoln’s Cornhill near the High Street, looking to attract support of passers-by.

As well as The Showroom Parkour Club’s first open Parkour & Freerunning Workshop of the year, fun for all ages will be on offer, including Softplay, Climbing and Sports & Fitness Activities.

The event will run from 10AM to 4PM, with many Activities being free of charge.

They beat off stiff competition from more than 600 applicants to reach the voting stage in this year’s National Lottery Awards – the annual search for the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects.

The winners of the seven categories will each get a £3,000 cash prize, an iconic National Lottery Awards trophy and attend a star-studded glittering Awards ceremony in London, broadcast on BBC One in September.

National Lottery funding has enabled the club to buy equipment specifically designed for parkour and run courses for hundreds of local young people.

Joe Hicks, head coach at the Showroom Parkour and Freerunning Club at YMCA Lincolnshire, said: “I am delighted the YMCA Lincolnshire Parkour Club has been nominated for a National Lottery Award. National Lottery funding has enabled us to run parkour courses for hundreds of young people across Lincolnshire.

“Sessions take place at The Showroom Activity Centre where participants are taught how to use natural and adaptive movements to get from one point to another. It brings young people together from across the county from a diverse range of ethnic and social backgrounds. It is a really fantastic project and I hope the public will think so too and vote for us to win a National Lottery Award.”

TV star and actor John Barrowman will be presenting the National Lottery Awards for the sixth time this year. He said: “The National Lottery Awards are a great way to shine a spotlight on outstanding lottery-funded projects. Now in their 13th year, the Awards celebrate the talent and dedication of the amazing staff and volunteers that run incredible life changing Lottery-funded projects for the benefit of their communities.

“These local projects have worked very hard to become finalists and they now need public support because the project with the most votes in each category will be crowned the winner. Projects receive funding thanks to National Lottery players who raise £36 million every single week for Good Causes across the UK.”

To vote for the YMCA Lincolnshire Parkour Club, please go to lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards or telephone 0844 8369694 and follow the campaign on twitter: hashtag #NLAwards. Voting runs for four weeks from 9am on Wednesday 22 June until midnight on Wednesday 20 July.

There are seven projects competing for votes across seven categories, reflecting the main areas of National Lottery funding: arts, sport, heritage, health, environment, education and voluntary/charity.

Servicemen of RAF Digby have shown their continued support for local Homeless Charity, The Nomad Trust, by making them their chosen charity of the year until April 2017.

During a visit to the Nomad Trust’s Direct Emergency Access Night Shelter on Monks Road in June, the team met with Nomad Staff and Volunteers to discuss ideas for fundraising and collaboration.

Victoria Bradshaw, Project Manager for The Nomad Trust, speaks of the RAF’s support; ‘it’s really exciting to have such enthusiastic support – the team have invited us to their open day in August, planned bag packing days and other fundraising ideas, as well as donating blankets and boots for our service users.’

The Nomad Trust currently operate the county’s only direct access accommodation, providing rough sleepers a bed for the night, as well as two charity shops based on Sincil Street and Moorland Avenue which support the shelter.

Additionally, The Nomad Trust operates a number of supported housing facilities and a training room based in the North of Lincoln to support Veterans.

RAF Digby have previously worked in partnership with the Trust to organise social events for Veterans across Lincoln.

The Nomad Trust recently received approval for a new, £3m Centre, incorporating Direct Access Accommodation and Support Services.

The new Nomad Centre will be based on St. Rumbold Street, directly opposite YMCA Lincolnshire’s headquarters, offering 32 Emergency Beds and 40 Apartments.

Lincoln’s premier martial arts club, Lincoln Fight Factory, has announced details of its upcoming White Collar Boxing charity event, in support of The Nomad Trust.

White Collar Boxing is a casual boxing tournament, throwing first timers, amateurs and competitors in to the ring for a fun, friendly fight, all in the name of charity.

This time, Lincoln Fight Factory have chosen to support The Nomad Trust – a local charity offering emergency accommodation and support services to the homeless, rough sleepers and the most vulnerable members of our community.

‘Over the last few years the Lincoln Fight Factory has raised over £100,000 for some great charities including Adi’s Mission, Lincs to Nepal, Cancer Research, Macmillan Cancer Foundation, Ethan Maull’s ‘Up Yours to Cancer’ Foundation, The Fire Fighters Charity, the Lincoln City FC Youth Academy and the Injured Jockie’s Fund,’ explains Event Organiser, Shaun Burton.

‘…but this time 100% of the profits will be donated to the Nomad Trust.’

The Nomad Trust operates the county’s only Direct Access Emergency Night Shelter, based on Monks Road, a furniture warehouse on Monks Way, and two charity shops which support the shelter and welfare services, based on Sincil Street and Moorland Avenue.

The Trust merged with YMCA Lincolnshire in 2013 to protect and secure the provision of homeless support services, and has recently received approval to build a new £3m facility opposite YMCA headquarters on St Rumbold Street.

Emma Hume, Fundraising Officer for YMCA Lincolnshire and The Nomad Trust is ‘…delighted to have support from the community! We have a busy time ahead, securing the £3m needed to ensure the provision of these much needed facilities and services.’

She continued; ‘Events such as these not only raise funds for a valuable cause, but show those in need that there are people in our community who care.’

The new facility will offer Direct Access Emergency Accommodation, supported housing, triage, training and social spaces, more than tripling the capacity of the current 21-bed shelter.

The White Collar Boxing Event will be held at Lincolnshire Showground on Saturday 9th July 2016.

Further information on the event and ticket bookings can be found at Lincoln Fight Factory’s website: http://www.lincolnkba.co.uk

Funding Approved for Girls-Only Parkour & Freerunning Club

YMCA Lincolnshire and The Showroom Activity Centre are really excited to announce Lincolnshire’s first Girls-Only Parkour & Freerunning club will be kicking off at The Showroom at the beginning of next month.

Parkour, or Freerunning, is the discipline of controlled and efficient movement; a way of overcoming and interacting with obstacles in your immediate environment.

The sport, made famous by high-octane chase scenes in movies such as Casino Royal and features in high budget advertising campaigns, has become a focus for The Showroom, with their regular Parkour club engaging over 150 young people each week in physical activity.

Joe Hicks, Parkour Coach for The Showroom, explains how ‘many people see Parkour as an extreme sport; it is in fact more akin to a martial art in the way its practice revolves around self-improvement and self-restraint.’

‘Everyone can do Parkour – many of us do so without even realising… It’s accessible to everyone; it’s non-competitive and practiced in relation to an individual’s own abilities – you just need yourself and some shoes!’

Parkour sessions will be offered to young women aged 11-25 from 4th May 2016, aiming to encourage more young females to engage with the sport, and to generally be more active and stay fit.

Parkour UK, NGB for Parkour and Freerunning in the UK, have joined in with the massively successful national ‘#ThisGirlCan’ campaign, utilising the social handle and tag; ‘#ThisGirlCanTrace’/’SheCanTrace’, referring to Traceurs and Traceuses – male and female practitioners of Parkour, respectively.

The Showroom’s campaign hopes to tie in with the #ThisGirlCan, spreading the word and encouraging participation through the hashtags; #ThisGirlCanJump and #GiveParkourAGo.

The club, which has ran at The Showroom for the past four years, recently received £10,000 of funding from The Big Lottery Fund for new equipment.

‘The new equipment has transformed the club…’ says Joe. ‘I’ve been coaching in Lincoln for seven years, and this is the first Parkour and Freerunning specific equipment within the county. We now not only have the ability to introduce more young people to the sport, but we have facilities challenging enough to keep both local practitioners and our regular Advanced members occupied, challenged and inspired by movement.’

James Walker, Activity Centre Manager of The Showroom, explains how The Showroom’s Parkour Club has ‘given participants increased confidence, belief in themselves, and a great, fun way to keep fit.’

The 18th March 2016 saw YMCA Lincolnshire & The Nomad Trust's annual Sleep Easy event take place at Lincoln Cathedral.

Staff, Volunteers and supporters from the local community slept rough for the night, with the aim of raising funds in support of a new night shelter for the homeless.

Sleep Easy is an annual event supported by YMCA's across the country, where sponsored participants spend a night making a shelter from cardboard boxes and experiencing what it feels like to spend a night on the streets.

YMCA Lincolnshire left their donation systems open for a month following the event, to reach their £10,000 target.

Joe Hicks, Marketing & Communications for YMCA Lincolnshire, explained how 'sponsors have been unbelievably generous this year; supporting individuals and the cause alike…'

Fundraising through sponsorship collected by individuals, as well as donations in support of the event, now totals to a phenomenal £10,314.43.

The main aim of the Sleep Easy 2016 was to fundraise in aid of the new night shelter in Lincoln, but to also raise awareness of homelessness, and encourage the local community to run their own fundraising campaign on behalf of the YMCA Lincolnshire.

'This year's Sleep Easy has been the most successful Sleep Easy that YMCA Lincolnshire has run. Not only have we reached over our target but at the event itself we saw creativity through art and music in aid of the homeless. We are overwhelmed by the support of the local community and are excited to start the next phase of fundraising for the new night shelter' says Emma Hume, Fundraising Officer for YMCA Lincolnshire.

'Choosing the YMCA or The Nomad Trust to fundraise for could completely change someone's life for the better. Whether you're planning a mud run, bike ride or cake sale please get in contact and we will support you as much as we can.'

YMCA Lincolnshire currently operates 129 units of accommodation, with The Nomad Trust's night shelter housing 21 emergency beds for the homeless. The charity also offers accommodation advice, supported housing for veterans and various other charitable and commercial services across the county.

In 2015, over 200 individuals were in need of accommodation within Lincoln; with the work of YMCA Lincolnshire & the Nomad Trust they support currently 152 individuals in accommodation and housing support.

The new Nomad Night Shelter will aim to provide a minimum of 16 en-suite bedrooms offering 32 emergency bed spaces, alongside 40 apartments over two floors for temporary residents. The build will also have a community café, meeting room, training facilities and a clinical room, to complement YMCA Lincolnshire's St Rumbold Street site located opposite the new build.

YMCA Lincolnshire merged with The Nomad Trust in 2013, to secure and sustain accessible tenancies across the county, as well as ensuring the permanence of Lincolnshire's only emergency access night shelter.

Speaking of the new build, Malcolm Barham, CEO of YMCA Lincolnshire, said 'it would also mean that the Nomad Trust would, for the first time, be able to offer daytime services'; alongside accessible emergency accommodation, day services have been 'desperately needed' in Lincoln.

Sainsbury's Staff visit The Nomad Trust Night Shelter

The morning of Tuesday 12th April saw a team of Volunteers from Sainsbury's visit The Nomad Trust's Emergency Night Shelter to see how they can support the charity.

Led by Deputy Store Manager, Andy Burgess, the team included Staff from across all departments, looking for ways they can support their community.

They were shown the shelter's facilities and given the opportunity to talk with staff about supporting the Trust.

Mr Burgess explained how the team wanted 'to understand why and how' their support was needed; 'we can look at both helping within the community and reducing our waste.'

The team invited The Nomad Trust to submit an application to their upcoming Charity of the Year project, which will be voted on by Sainsbury's customers later this year.

Sainsbury's have a very successful waste management programme, where none of their waste food goes in to landfill. Excess food goods are donated, or refined in to biofuel.

The Supermarket has provided the trust with food donations over the past three years, and is now wishing to expand and formalise this agreement.

Victoria Bradshaw, Project Manager for the Nomad Shelter, said 'Our residents eat well, lots of fruit and veg… But we're really excited at the prospect of good quality meat, and particularly eggs.'

When speaking with Nomad Staff about the supply of food goods, Mr Burgess, Deputy Store Manager, disagreed with policies ensuring disposal of edible food goods, stating;

'If we would eat it, why can't someone else..?'

Speaking of The Nomad Trust's Shelter, 'it is in our city, our community, and we can raise our game!'

The Nomad Trust and YMCA Lincolnshire have just had plans approved to build a new Emergency and Supported Accommodation Centre, including Day Services, Training facilities, Clinical and Social spaces.

Those interested in supporting the new facility can donate to our #SleepEasyLincoln2016 campaign; phase one of our fundraising for new build, open until Monday 18th April.

YMCA Lincolnshire & The Showroom Activity Centre's most successful youth project, The Showroom Parkour Club, is going from strength to strength, having just received £10,000 of funding from the National Lottery to purchase new equipment.

The Showroom's Parkour & Freerunning club began as a small project delivering a single one hour sessions to eight beginners over a six week period. Within a year, the club had expanded to deliver five weekly sessions at the Showroom, providing top class Parkour coaching to over one hundred young people each week.

Joe Hicks, Parkour coach for YMCA Lincolnshire explains; “Parkour is the Discipline of Movement, and is accessible for everyone. All you need is yourself, and ideally a decent pair of shoes! …most of us practice Parkour subconsciously without even realising.”

The Showroom have recently bought bigger and better equipment resulting from recent funding bids; balance beams and rails, foam cubes, and four various sized 'Walls' up to two meters tall which interconnect to provide endless possibilities for obstacles. This in turn will provide a better experience for the Showroom Parkour Club's Traceurs of all ages and abilities.

Joe illuminates how the 'extreme' perception of Parkour is simply wrong; '99% of our training is done at ground level, with a focus on repetition, discipline and, in equal measures, both self-improvement and self-restraint.'

The new equipment has been well received by club members, being described in feedback as 'amazing', facilitating 'really fun sessions.'

Oscar Coombes, 16, is an Advanced Club Member and Volunteer Coach for The Showroom's Parkour Club, who described the new equipment's arrival as; 'a dream come true.' This is the first purpose built and accessible Parkour equipment in Lincoln.

Our sessions are very popular, and we are currently operating a waiting list looking to gauge interest in further clubs. If you have any interest in giving Parkour a go, please contact The Showroom Activity Centre on 01522 508360, or at: activities@theshowroom.org.uk.

The club has also delivered bespoke sessions and courses to various schools, uniformed groups and organisations across the county, including children's services, young offenders and disability groups. If you would like to know more about our Parkour club, please don't hesitate to get in touch with Joe at: joe.hicks@theshowroom.org.uk

The 18th March 2016 saw YMCA Lincolnshire & The Nomad Trust's annual Sleep Easy event take place at Lincoln Cathedral.

The event saw our individuals sleep rough for the night, with the aim of raising funds in support of a new night shelter for the homeless.
